Not my favorite CD from Sonny
A couple of decent tracks but overall not the best in my book. This CD is definately not my favorite from Sonny.

Sonny Landreth - Not As Good As The Previous Two
Many Landreth fans seem to rate this album really high, but for me it was a bit of a letdown after his previous albums. Landreth tends to have fairly long breaks between albums and it took "Levee Town" five years to follow up the excellent "South Of I-10". It is not that the album is bad, but the songwriting here just does not seem to be on the same level as his previous two. The material is a bit more on the pop side although Landreth does include two killer instrumentals "Z. Rider" and "Spider-Gris" that both showcase Sonny's incredible guitar prowess. Fans of Jimmy Buffett will recognize "U. S. S. Zydecoldsmobile" a song Buffett covers on his "Far Side Of The World" album. Although I think "Levee Town" is a slight step down there still some good songs to be found here. Along with the above mentioned ones the title tracks, "This River", "Deep South" and "Turning With The Century" are all decent as well. Overall this is an average Landreth album. Worth owning, but not as good as some of his other stuff.

Sonny Light
The music here is a little lighter, and more pop-oriented than the blues-heavy "The Road We're On," as if Landreth was falling in love when he wrote this one, and out of it by the time he got to "Road," but all the cool stuff is here, including instrumentals "Z Ryder," and "Spider Gris. This is one of three Sonny Landreth CDs that gets pretty constant play around my house. " Joe Mouton's accordian on "USS Zydecoldsmobile" adds some delightful extra spice, if you only know the "Grant Street" version of this song, and the moment when Sonny switches from acoustic to electric guitar on "Broken Hearted Road" is transcendant. As always, David Ranson adds more than just a basic beat with his bass riffs. If Dave was backing anyone but Sonny he'd have long since gained a huge reputation as one of the best bassists around, but with all Sonny's awesome innovation, it takes some careful listening to realize that Dave more than holds his own. This is a delightful record, and I not only highly recommend it, I have bought it for my friends. Go on out and get you one or two!.

Sonny is the best....
Levee Town is a fantastic record, back to front! 'Love and Glory' has to be one of the prettiest songs you could ever hope to hear.

Levee Town
While I haven't heard a Sonny Landreth CD that I didn't enjoy, this one probably has the most consistently strong songwriting. This is a fantastic CD. "Z. Rider", the opening song in many of Sonny's live performances, is by itself worth the price of the CD. In addition to showcasing his chops on the guitar, it just makes you want to jump up and boogie. While Sonny's musical roots may be the blues, his songs have an infectious joy about them that chase the blues away.
