Avril has seriously regressed with this song How else do you describe songs like "Sk8r Boi" and "Complicated". Avril Lavigne burst on to the scene in 2001 with a punky, bratty sound that could be equal parts annoying and catchy. But, given that she was young and new, it could be forgiven, especially since her songs, musically and lyrically, were evolving and maturing impressively. Songs off her 2nd album, "Under My Skin", like "Nobody's Home" and "My Happy Ending" illustrate this. Unfortunately, "Girlfriend" is a serious, SERIOUS step back. The music captures the annoying vibe of "Sk8r Boi" and the lyrics are so incredibly childish that I could get an 8th grader to write something more mature. By itself, this song is unbelievably terrible, but then Avril compounds the pain by remixing it with 2007's most grating new artist, Lil Mama ("Lip Gloss"). "Girlfriend" is such a backward move that Avril's attempts to return to her more serious leanings with songs like "When You're Gone" fall flat because the bad taste left by this song.
