A Lost Era
Before that there was "Hutch" but Turner and Hutch really made it in Europe. There was Bobby Short- who should have learned from Turner- but then, Bobby wouldn't have become "The Darling of the Upper East Side. . not in the US. Pity- they were both great. BUT- that sort of singing has "Gone With the Wind" like all good music of yesteryear. Nice to find a CD of Turner. Love it.

A superb salon vocalist
In this CD, he offers exquisite renditions of "I Get Along without You Very Well" as well as "Dinner for One, Please, James," the lovely "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and "Thanks for the Memory. Turner Layton was one of a handful of American artists who shaped European careers during the 30's. " This is desert island, incomparable stuff. If you have any feeling for these exceptional songs, Layton is an absolute must. Go ahead. Pull the trigger and order it. You will be dumbfounded by your recognition of the the very idea that such a gifted musician could have gone virtually unnoticed on our shores.

Utterly exquisite singing of some superb songs
He seems to me to have been the obvious inspiration for Bobby Short but he is calm and subtle in comparison. Turner Layton was a cafe society kind of '40s entertainer whose fame was limited to Europe. I think Layton's singing (and playing) brings these lovely standards to the level of popular leider. He was the finest singer of his time.
