Its possible to over-remaster
It had a few I hadn't heard before. This is a great collection of Leadbelly songs. However whomever remasterd this disc went a little overboard. Reverb is added to most of the tracks. At times way to much. Some of the tracks also clip a little when lead gets real loud. Though not much. I wouldn't recommend this album for the purists. Only the obssesive collector.

1st of 2 CDs in Lead Belly Memorial series
Taken from expertly reprocessed and cleaned-up 78s, this is a fine selection of Lead Belly guitar/vocal solos, with very acceptable sound. (52') One of Collectables' "Stinson Collectors Series" CD reissues. Also see their companion disk "Lead Belly Memorial Vols. 3 & 4" COL5604 (54'). All these tracks were originally recorded by Moses Asch in his studio, and his pressings went to Stinson Records as a result of Asch's Folkways bankruptcy; however, Asch's masters are now at the Smithsonian, which has produced its own "Lead Belly Legacy" series of CDs.

Collectables has also issued another earlier 2-CD series "Leadbelly Golden Classics", Parts 1 and 2. Golden Classics Part 1 "Bourgeois Blues" COL5183 (28') also has good sound, but all tracks on that CD are entirely duplicated on either "Vols. 1 & 2" or "Vols. 3 & 4" of this "Memorial" series; on Golden Classics Part 2 "Defense Blues" COL5196 (24') four of the ten tracks are duplicated in this "Memorial" series, and six are unique; but the sound quality of the CD is very poor. These 6 unique tracks appear not to be Asch recordings, but I haven't tried to verify this.
