Have always liked this album! I first acquired this album when I was in grade school and I've always liked it; in fact, it's one of my favorite JL albums! I like the outspokenness of the songs, and most of them are very catchy. It was interesting for me to read many of the reviews here, which seem to be negative or partially so. And yes, I like Yoko's contributions to this album. I haven't heard the remastered edition but it's on my list!.
Lennon's Worst
The subject matter simply does not hold up when listening to this album in 2009. This album was Lennon's protest album and, as such, was almost destined to be a 1972 time capsule. John Sinclair, who ?
I guess you'll have to Google him. It isn't just the subject matter that makes listening to this album difficult.
The production is often overbearing, Elephant's Memory were not the best musicians Mr. Lennon worked with during his career, and Yoko's vocal stylings are not for everyone (or for most). It seems that somewhere, or at some time, Lennon lost his sense of humour. The flashes of wit that occurred during the recording sessions for The Beatles classic albums (Revolver, Pepper, etc. . . )are absent. There is wit, often biting, on Plastic Ono Band and Imagine. The mood is darker, especially on Plastic Ono Band, but there is a special spark. What we are left with on this album is political sloganeering. Listen to this once in order to satisfy your morbid curiosity. It is that bad !
The one song that does go somewhere is Woman is the N#$%@r of the World. The song has structure and its message still matters today. Progress has been made, but globally there is still work to be done. One recommendation:
If you have a party and are trying to get people to leave, play the live version of Don't Worry Kyoko ! I'm sure the guests will get the hint and leave. .
Dated album saved only by Lennon
Not that I didn't try, it's just that John's solo work was never aimed at me (in the open sense his Beatle work was). I bought this on an Apple Records LP back in the late '70's, and while I liked John's singing as I did on all his records, I just couldn't get into this one. His solo stuff was either about him or about Yoko, but never too much about all their causes. Sadly, this LP was, and it made it even more out of my reach. Its not that what John & Yoko were protesting shouldn't have been protested, but as a casual record buyer that wasn't what I wanted.
I've played the record many times, though no where close to how often I've played his other work. I remember being so happy to hear that after his semi-retirement John was coming back, and how thrilled I was when I heard 'Double Fantasy'. Although the songs were about him & his family, they were far more accessable. This is it, I thought - John Lennon is BACK, and he's gonna kick the '80's into high gear!
Sadly, we all know how that turned out. We still (and always will) miss you, John.
Make It Stop!!!!!!!
After 'we're all water'. Would someone please put Yoko out of her screeching misery! "We're All Water" is enough torture to make me confess to anything! I realize the rage at the time was Scream or Primal Therapy, but give me a break. . . . . we're all deaf!!!!!!!!!! .
Raw but Well Seasoned
From the dark lyriced, light lilt of Luck of the Irish, to the driving beat of Sunday, Bloody Sunday, to the Primal Scream of Cold Turkey - Lennon delivers. An ideal album for the hard-core Lennon fan.
Yoko's contributions to this album are heavy and portend the punk sound of the late '70s, foreshadowing such bands as the B-52's.
Once again, politics and social justice are the above the fold in this aptly wrapped Op-ed. A real winner for one who is "sick and tired of hearing things from uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics. "
