The First one... For me, anyway. This record is way more than just the first album released by Julian Lennon. It's the first album I ever listened to and loved (other than those released by Paul McCartney/Wings) that had any remote connection to The Beatles, together or apart. For that reason, I've got more loyalty to Valotte alone than the entire Beatles catalogue and most of their solo output.
I was probably three years of age when I first listened to a Beatles album, Abby Road. At first, I didn't get it, or any of their earlier records. Because of my youthful ignorance, I knew who Paul Mccartney & Wings were (two of my favorite records were Pipes of Peace and Wings at the Speed of Sound), but I didn't know Paul had begun as a Quarryman-turned-Beatle. Then, I was four years old when I first heard the name of Julian Lennon. It was the two singles from Valotte: the title track and "Too Late for Goodbyes," which were getting regular radio airtime. I also remember Julian's appearance during a TV special in Disneyland, apparently miming "Too Late for Goodbyes. " It really looked as if he were playing that harmonica part. When my family finally got a copy of the album, I considered it a treat whenever we listened to it. By this time, I had finally grown to embrace the Beatles and learn their names, but even to this day, John Lennon is more like "Julian Lennon's father" to me than just himself
For my taste, it's not tough to listen to most of the songs and appreciate the aptitude involved either in writing them or recording them. It may have been "too soon for hellos" as far as Julian's career was concerned, but that doesn't matter with regards to the album, itself. Julian has every bit of his father's gift as a writer, and he's also no slouchy keyboard player. [An interesting detail here is that, though it includes plenty of acoustic drums, piano and brass instruments, I don't hear a trace of acoustic guitar; all the guitars sound electric to me. That's an unprecedented feat. ] The fact that his pop success was cut short, or even that he didn't cut half as many records as he should've after this one, is no fault of his own. Every new release from Julian Lennon is worth the wait, as far as I'm concerned. We should hear all of them, starting with this one.
Still a favorite
It was sometime in 1984, and they had it cranked on the store's sound system. I still remember hearing Valotte for the first time at my local "Record World" on Long Island (which no longer exists). I had planned to quickly pick up some blank tapes, but found myself hooked on the music I was hearing. So I browsed aimlessly for a half hour and eventually picked up a copy myself! Amazing CD that I love to this day (I still have the original from 1984).
.
great classic soft rock
The album has a very easy listening to "feel" about it. Julian Lennon is the son of John and Yoko Ono. I am updating my cassette tapes, so that is one of the reasons that I purchased this product.
just like his famous father but style of his own
he does sound like his father but he diffently has his own style. loved his cd, wish he would have continued.
.
stone cold classic with class
once i did, look out! i loved it more than i thought i would, and that's no swipe at julian. i kept meaning to get this. i LOVE too late for goodbyes, so that song alone would of made me happy, but the rest of the album is so great it truly blew me away. i don't know where to start, so i won't but needless to say the whole album is awesome save for one track, and that's saying alot for any album. he has the muscle shoals musicians backing him up, so the musicianship is tight and professional. just buy it, if you like great music and love his singles from this album, you'll flip!.
