Though old, Lightfoot hasn't lost his touch His voice is still strong and he hasn't lost his ability to write very meaningful music. While it's apparent he has aged since his golden years, Lightfoot can still put out some notes. I bought this CD out of sheer support for Gordo, but I find myself listening to it and enjoying it more than I expected.
Gord's swann album?
You skimp through it once , maybe twice and just as you're about to pile it with the other duds a song starts playing in your head. Damn it! Just when I thought I'd got a dud album your head gets turned around. You wonder which one it is and you discover its that last one - "Sometimes I wish". Yes not bad, you think. But by then you've also heard "Till the end of time". The next day you wonder whats this other song in your head. You play the album again but by this time you've listended to "Harmony" three times and you think 'Yea, I get it, not bad'. Then you hear "River of light" and think 'mmm. . . let me listen to that again. Then you listen to the rest and finally come to "Sometimes I wish" again and you sing the chorus : "Everywhere I go, there's nobody home. . . " with Gordon in full flight. And its all over, you're totally sold, and wonder if Gordon will ever do another one again. His voice is so croaky and life is cruelly taking away one of my favourite artists of the past forty years. His melodies tug so deep you just gotta go back and listen to all his other work!
If you have liked GL's songs you wont be disappointed by these songs, only maybe a little by his deteriorating voice.
The Rich Voice is Not There
All of them are prior to 1983. I recently purchased about six Gordon Lightfoot CD's. It seems about that time frame that his voice started to change. While he is still a fine song writer, his beautiful voice is simply not there anymore. That said, I do like the song "Inspiration Lady". Even though it is not the voice of the younger Gordon Lightfoot, it is a beautiful song nonetheless. It certainly expresses a beautiful sentiment, which, is what so many of Gordon Lightfoot's songs do.
Gordon Lightfoot
Once again, he captured my heart with his tender and real life lyrics. Gordon has done it again! His first cd after nearly dying is an amazing look into his life. His voice is still touching, even without the richness of his younger days. . . the feeling is there, as always. He is a legend and one of a kind. He has it all. . . a writer, arranger, singer and musician. Also, his band has been with him for many years. Together, or alone, they continue to bring magic. . . a one of a kind simple yet intricate blend of lyrics and music that has stood on its own for decades and continues to bring joy to my days! God Bless you, Gordon, and of course, all "the guys".
Great work
I am so glad he made it back from his collapse a couple of years ago. Simply put, one of his best works in several years. I have seen him twice over the years, sorry to have missed his performance in Northampton earlier this year. .
