Look Where All This Talking Got Us BayBee It's depressing but it rocks. This album would have to make it onto anyone's 'top 50 rock albums of all time' list. Good from beginning to end and, I Alone, Lightning Crashes, White Discussion, T. B. D. , are all songs to ruin my speakers on. Rarely have I heard rock come through like this, every other album by Live that I've heard has been great or at least good as well. .
This mid-90s mass-marketed triumph has aged quite well indeed
Sure, the music here uses the simplest of chord progressions and the band shows no especial virtuosity, but they put their heart into their work. Live's 1994 album THROWING COPPER was a highly successful post-grunge effort, selling millions of copies and becoming a radio staple for years to come, and it's easy to see why. Ed Kowalczyk's lyrics, heavy on Eastern mysticism but obliquely worded enough to win praise in, of all places, the Christian rock press, certainly seemed more substantial than what was being heard at the time. One reason THROWING COPPER stands above the crowd of mid-90s chart toppers is that it has remarkably little filler. Until I thought to write this review, I hadn't heard the record in nearly a decade. But on relistening, I found that I knew 11 of its 13 songs by heart. In a genre like major label pop rock, when records too often contain two solid tracks and then a half hour or more of forgettable doggerel, Live clearly show some songwriting talent.
Sure, it's fluff, but it's fluff that won't let me review it any lower than I am. There's a place in nearly everyone's listening for this kind of infectious simple rock, and THROWING COPPER will fill such needs.
Profound and Poetic
This is arguably their best album. Live is one of my favorite bands of all time. The depth, poetry, insight, spirituality and positivity of Ed's lyrics, his impassioned and rich voice, and the band's full, textured, rockin' out sound combine to make this band more than just a great rock band.
Their Best Selling Record
While the first Album "Mental Jewelery" is also a good album, "Throwing Copper" had a couple of songs that became hits - "I Alone" and "Lightning Crashes" being two such tracks. Live's 2nd Album was the one that launched the band into the public's eye and nothing since (sales wise at least) met this one. From the opening of "Otter Creek" until the end this record is one good song after another
I really think Live is one band that garner's more criticism than they deserve, I always enjoy their records.
Live is just a great band....
Good basic rock and roll never gets to old. From the first time I heard them I thought they were a great band and I still think so today.
