Pretty Basic Sound The presence of the classics Volver, Volver and Guantanamera should clue you in right away that Acoustic En Vivo is going to be back to the roots. If you are looking for another trademark musical exploration by Los Lobos, then you might just want to check the track listing first.
Because I like almost anything the band does, I don't mind the pretty basic sound here. But as the previous reviewer said, that sound rarely gains enough traction to make any of the songs truly memorable. Maricella, with blaring sax solos evocative of Gato Barbieri, is the best in my opinion. Besides that, I really enjoy the punchy La Guacamaya, Los Ojos de Pancha, and the huppa-shuppa sound of Mexico Americano which harks back to Los Lobos' first full-length album.
If I were introducing someone to the music of Los Lobos, this would not be the CD I'd use. Acoustic En Vivo serves better as kind of a Southwestern party album. Though I give this only three stars, I recommend this to anyone who is a long-time fan of Los Lobos and doesn't yet have it.
Maybe I'm expecting too much...
There is no build up of memntum, and I don't think this was set up as a cohesive project. and don't get me wrong, this is a very good acoustic set from Los Lobos, but it has the feel of being culled from various recordings. The outstanding moments are "Two Janes". "Guantanamera" and "Maricella". In fact at the conclusion of "Maricella," it feels like the set is about to take off. Instead, additional songs sound like Los Lobos is idling on the runway.
I can recall outstanding moments throughout the times I have seen them, and have found the Live at the Fillmore Set from this year less than satisfying. This set just seems to be a smattering of live acoustic traditional Mexican tunes, delivered competently, and a few notable numbers from their catalogue. Somehow, I'd expect more than competency from them.
