Missing the chemistry with a live audience
Unlike Stephen's two previous albums Craig Machine and Superhero, 3 Ballons is missing the interaction between Stephen and a live audience. I am a big Stephen Lynch fan, but I was very disappointed with this album. One of Stephen's greatest strengths has always been this interaction, without it the album just isn't as good. The songs themselves also don't measure up to his previous work.

Sorry Stephen
Every album up to "The Craig Machine" has delivered. I should say that I've been a Stephen Lynch fan since I saw his first special on Comedy Central the very first time it aired. This one, not so much.

The peak of the album is the first track, "Waiting. " This peak is occasionally matched, but the album for the most part leaves the listener wanting a laugh and longing for the quality of previous albums. There is virtually no cleverness to be found here. I give this album 3 stars purely for the reason that there have been worse attempts at humor in song, less gifted musicians (Stephen Lynch could probably have fledged a legitimate career with his vocal skills), and less funny comedians. Unfortunately, Stephen set the bar incredibly high for himself with his previous work, and not only did he come up short of that, he managed to make a VERY average comedy record. Please, Stephen, bounce back from this.

Hooray for Stephen Lynch
This album might not be the best he's done, considering how superb the others are though, that shouldn't deter anyone from listening or buying this album. As far as musical comedy goes Stephen Lynch is number one in my book. While some of the songs fall a little flat to me, "The Fishin' Hole" is a great song. Once when drunk in a carful of friends, we listened to it about three or four times in a row.

Lynch is a great talent, but sometimes takes the easy road
Excellent voice, with a great range, and terrific songwriter and entertainer as well. First of all I think Stephen Lynch is a GREAT talent. I downloaded this album about a month ago and for the most part he plays what his audience wants to hear, kind of "explicit" over the top stuff that makes you laugh, I think sometimes though thats the easy path for sales.
A few tracks on this CD really show his talent. Ballad of Scarface is one of his best works, so is Peanuts. Neither one just tries to grab you with explicit lyrics, both stand strong on their own words and music. Thats where I think Lynch shines.
I hope he doesn't keep going for the shock value as much (kind of reminds me of Stern or Opie & Anthony, when you start to drop creativity and only try for "shock" value, it diminishes your talent and lowers your common denominator audience).
My personal opinion is Stephen Lynch and this CD are excellent, just want to see him keep going forward showing off his talent for writing, and that stellar voice, and not try and dumb it down so much.
Saw him recently in Poughkeepsie and he puts on an excellent show, look forward to seeing him at Carnegie Hall in October.
