YNGWIE MALMSTEEN LEGEND B4 HIS TIME!!!!!!!
I HEARD THE SONG ILL SEE THE LIGHT FROM HIS 85 RELEASE MARCHING OUT. THIS IS GOD IN HUMAN FORM LOL. . . AWESOME & NOT JUST BY HIS GUITAR ALONE, HOWEVER IT DEFINES THE SIGNATURE STATUS OF THE SONG & CAREER AND WITH JEFF SCOTT SOTO BLISTERING ON LEAD VOCALS. THEN THERES THE ICONIC INSTRUMENTAL BLACK STAR FROM HIS 84 RELEASE RISING FORCE. . . ICONIC MAYBE THE CLOSEST WAY TO DESCRIBE THE DIVERSITY THAT THE SONG HOLDS, STARTS IN A SMOOTH CALM ACOUSTIC, THEN KICKS INTO A DARK TONE THATS PLAYED EFFORTLESSLY INTO A FRENZY OF RIFFS INTO THE SOLOS,ID RECOMMEND GETTING THE TRIAL BY FIRE LIVE IN LENINGRAD, THE YNGWIE MALMSTEEN COLLECTION ON & EVEN IF YOU COULD FIND THEM ON DVD. & YOULL BE HOOKED BY 1ST LISTEN HOWEVER AS ANY METALHEAD CAN TELL YOU YNGWIE IS A PERFECTIONIST WHICH IS WHY HES VERY HARD TO WORK WITH HES GONE THROUGH A FRONTMAN FOR ALMOST EVERY RELEASE HES GOT. . . CURRENT PERPETUAL FLAME LEAD VOCALIST RIPPER OWENS. BUT THE CLOSEST ROCKING INSTRUMENTAL NEXT TO BLACK STAR HAS GOTTA BE ECLIPSE. ALTHOUGH IN TASTE OF METAL COMMERCIALISM, HE DOES IT JUSTICE AS THE POSTER BOY THAT SETS HIM APART FROM OTHER GUITARISTS. . . BEST SONGS ON IT. . . . MAKING LOVE, DEVIL IN DISGUISE, JUDAS, EVEN WHAT DO YOU WANT, THE WHOLE CD IS GREAT ANY GUITAR FAN WOULD SIT THERE & SAY HOWS HE DOING THAT. . . ITS THAT FRICKING HES THAT FRICKIN AWESOME!!! .

Arena shred
In this case, it's a good thing, because it sounds huge and isn't lacking whatsoever in shred. This is the most arena oriented sound and production for a Malmsteen album. Fantastic tone as usual and Yngwie does some particularly INSANE sweeps on this album on songs like 'Demon Driver' and 'Motherless Child'!!

This was the first album with the excellent Goran Edman and in spite of shreddy moments, Yngwie often held back during the "normal" parts of the songs and waited until the solo for his time to shine (I wish he'd do this more often!). Generally, this is more song oriented (meant to sound good in big arena tours) than many of his albums and I think it's great because it forced him to edit himself slightly. Yngwie was touring some big venues at the time and this type of sound just came naturally.

Even on bluesy numbers like 'Bedroom Eyes', Yngwie threw in an unusual chord progression to let you know this isn't some Midwestern US homegrown rock. This is very much a European import (and that's a very good thing when it comes to metal!!) and has a refreshingly non-American flavor. So much rock at the time was just straightforward Bon Jovi style pop, this was definintely Yngiwe.

A must for Malmsteen fans!.

The Change
From Eclipse on, Yngwie's albums have an added dimension that I cannot describe. Early Yngwie was great, of course, but something changed with this album. They feel somehow richer to me than the earlier material.

Great playing all round, but little meat on the bone.
With a simplified, less metal and less gothic bent than many of his earlier albums it was a serious play for generic hard rock fame and fortune. This album was a change of direction for Malmsteen. When yo uconsider that the studio album before this was Odyssey (w/Live in Leningrad falling in between) then the change in feel is quite marked.

First change - the band. Gone are the Johansson brothers and Joe Lynn Turner. Instead we have a new bunch of dudes - Goran Edman on vox (having fled the disaster that was John Norums solo career); Mats Olausson on keys, Michael Von Knorring on drums (couldn't tour due to health reasons) and Svante Henryson formerly of the Oslo philharmonic on bass.

Second change is the straightforward bunch of songs, only one instrumental and that's tacked onto the end. And this was a point that Yngwie used to defend himself against accusations that he only did songs that were excuses for long solos. Also this was the first album where Yngwie got his record company to release three singles instead of just one, these being Making Love, Bedroom Eyes and Save Our Love.

Ultimately this album is heavily keyboard oriented. The first two tracks though are pretty good rockers with real verve and Bedroom Eyes has a great solo and an excellent riff. Save Our Souls is a total dog that had a kind of cool video and Motherless Child scoots along though without much bottom end. Devil in Disguise is another OK rocker but the soft (read: gutless) production values and promience of keyboards don't do any favours for Judas and What Do You Want even if they do have nice vocal melodies.

Demon Driver is similarly afflicted though not so badly and Faultline, about living in earthquake zones isn't as naff as you may first think. The album does get rounded up well by See You In Hell (Don't Be Late) which is a speed rocker where Edman really shines. The instrumental Eclipse ends the album nicely.

So there you go. Not a bad album, it deserved more kudos that it got but perhaps a bit more ooommpphh may of kept fans of Trilogy etc om board as the more metal minded fans found less to be joyful about on this disc. An album stunted by too wussy a production job and too much smoothness, for want of a better term. My tip - try to download Making Love and Bedroom Eyes. But committed fans such as myself will probably ignore my advice and buy it anyway! And will find that this album isn't as bad as some have made out, just too flat to really stand out against the mans better albums.
