HOT STUFF@
Awesome CD , seriously. I never actually owned this LP until I got it from Amazon, trying to round out my Yngwie Malsteen music collection. The instrumentals are very powerful (LEVIATHAN , very nasty and heavy instrumental)and the ones with vocals are outstanding. [His early/mid-career stuff is so damn good!!@!@]
The title track is my favorite. Masterful sweep picking for the main riff is mind - boggling. I can see why he never plays that one live. It's a BEAST in terms of complexity! LoL
I also liked "My Own Enemy" very dang cool waltz feel to this song. ". . . Babylon" is also hard-hitting. "Dragonfly" also very good song.
Great production quality. Good vocals and drums on this LP. Every song is hitting on all cylinders. I am very happy with this purchase! wish I'd have gotten it years ago. .
one of the best Malmsteen albums
The vocals by Goran are very melodic and many times held out majestically. You will find some classical/orchestral interludes mixed in metal songs, such as "Forever is a Long Time," "Cry No More," and "No Mercy". The songs are very well-written, production is great and guitars awesome. "Perpetual" is and instrumental that kicks things off and is alone worth the price of the album. You will find ballads like "Cry No More" and "I'm My Own Enemy" along with faster songs like "No Mercy". The cover art is also cool. .
Classic
It was definitely a breath of fresh air to me in the early '90s when everyone else seemed to be donning flannel shirts and trying to play as badly as possible. This is one of Yngwie's best albums and was released at the time of the death of metal in the early '90s and the rise of the puke otherwise known as grunge. It was a step away from either the more commercial sounds of Eclipse or the rawer sounds of some of his other albums, to a more conceptual style.
Songs like 'How Many Miles To Babylon' are epic in nature and transport you away from everyday life for a short time. Then there is the thunderous 'Leviathan', this is Viking music! The intro to 'Fire & Ice' has some of the most blistering, VULGAR sweeps I've ever heard! Other guitarists can sweep, but Yngwie does it with such vulgarity, I love it!! You simply CAN'T nail it any harder than he does! Perhaps one day I can approach this level.
Yngwie had a unique tone on this album that I haven't heard before or since from him and this one included my favorite vocalist that he's used (Goran). Even the cover and liner notes/pics are very cool as well.
I consider this mandatory for Yngwie fans! There are probably only about 6-7 albums out of many that get that high mark from me. .
Yngwie's Last Hurrah
I'm Listening to all of my Malmsteen cds as I type this and I can't find one that has more bluesy/rock laden tunes on it than this! Opening with "Perpetual", a blistering instrumental testament to his continued viability and "Dragonfly" with it's swaggering rock n roll guitar rhythm and solo, and continuing with other cuts like "C'est La Vie" and "Cry No More" ,he crafted a masterpiece here that none of his later albums came anywhere near topping! "Black Star" (from RISING FORCE) and "Dragonfly" go with me on my phonechip everywhere! None of the tracks from here even made it to the "Collection" and I can't figure out how that travesty happened because this was one of his ALL TIME BEST!.
Yngwie star was still bright
I really admire him and I love to hear him playing when he is focused and concentrated. Yngwie is a living legend of the guitar. This album from 1992 is probably one of the last if not the very last very good album from him. After this one came only confused albums with some good moments here and there, but this one is his last big production effort. One of the last where he was able to put in his best. Sure this album is not Rising force or Marching out and neither Trilogy, in my opinion his best albums overall (together with Live in Leningrad probably). But Fire and Ice is a consistent album throughout with some very well written music and some very good guitar work from Yngwie in it. The only tune that I really can't stand is Teaser, too much AOR for Yngwie and completly out of place here. By the way Teaser doesn't mix at all with the rest of the material comprehended in Fire and Ice. It was probably put here for Elektra's will. Probably they told Yngwie, "man, we need to have a possible single to extract from the album" and so he did write Teaser. It was a video too if I remember well. But it is a poor song for real! The rest of the material instead have Yngwie at his best, not too much in the guitar hero role. He balanced more his parts and solos leaving more space to the compositions. But when he plays he plays very focused. The band is strong, Mark Boals voice very good for the material. The orchestration take this album in the Medieval atmospheres sometimes but it is something that you can expect from Yngwie. I return to this album from time to time, you can consider this one for sure, after the three or four Yngwie's albums I told you before (start with Live in Leningrad or Rising Force). .
