OK I liked the tone of her voice on that one song on the television show. I am a 52 year old woman and heard Aimee Mann singing a song from James Taylor on a rerun of the West Wing. Bought the CD just to check it out and hear more.
She's fine. I assume she will appeal to a younger audience. Maybe I should stick to James Taylor?.
What a great effort!
Aimee Mann is fantastic and this is a great collection. I only wish I had heard this CD a long time ago. There is not, in my humble opinion, a weak song. My cats even started purring when I played it for the first time. I may be wrong every ten years or so - they haven't been yet.
Wonderful vocals, edgy lyrics
Right from the start those beautiful vocals are tossing out challenging and angry lyrics wrapped in edgy but tuneful music. Option to indulge in this
Exercise in cowardice
Ignorance without the bliss
Lines like these from "No Choice in the Matter" Let's you know Aimee Mann doesn't waste any time with I'M WITH STUPID. Each song has a memorable line or two that just oozes attitude with intelligence. "I wish I was both young and stupid Then I too could have the fun that you did," from "I Could Make a Killing," is a prime example of that clever turn of phrase, not just attitude, but emotion as well.
The biggest problem with most of the songs is that they can go on a bit too long, lessening the impact of what a tighter arrangement would have accomplished. The silence and the wrap up on "It's not Safe" is more pretension than effective and the periodic guitar solos just don't improve things. But the overall quality of the lyrics and wonderful vocals more than compensate and they make I'M WITH STUPID well worth your time.
AIMEE MANN - I'm With Stupid _ Excellent!
Some highlights: "Long Shot", "Frankenstein", "Amateur", "Superball". This album is fantastic. . . Every song on here is great. I found this solo album even better than the first ("Whatever"). .
Over Produced & Under Inspired
I loved "Whatever", so when "I'm With Stupid" came out I bought it with eager anticipation. I am a huge Aimee Mann fan. What a difference! The rock and folk of "Whatever" are overshadowed by pristine sound and dance oriented production, as well as her songwriting being well below the 1st album's standard. Especially now that Mann has released 2 great albums since, in "Bachelor #2" & "Lost In Space". She is obviously getting better with age and has become the premiere singer-songwriter of today. She is fantastic and I would recommend any of her albums over "I'm With Stupid", really the runt in an otherwise towering solo career.
Bachelor No. 2
Lost in Space
Whatever.
