Customer Reviews
Well done Raven Records
I remember Manfred Mann for the hits but I had no idea they could play the blues with such expertise. What an excellent couple of hours this two cd compilation provides. This double cd really covers a lot ie: 60's blues rock, pop, even some protest songs. If you are like me and love the 60"s British Invasion this is a must have. The remastering can't be beat! Also recommend Yardbirds "Ultimate" and Kinks"BBC sessions" as well as Nuggets 2, load up your changer and set to random- EXCELLENT.

A very good retrospective

I don't have much to add to the editorial review as well as the review written prior to mine: both excellent!

I believe a few additional notes should round up this item: the 24-page booklet written by guitarist Tom McGuinness in 2000 offers a truly interesting biography of the band; the sound restoration on this 2-disc set is excellent (using SBM), and the selection of material offers a wide-spread view of the artists' musical genres, and includes tracks up to the "Smith & D'Abo" album released in 1976. Made in AUS in 2000, Serial# RVCD-102, Playing Time: 154 min.

Of special mention is track 21 on disc 2, "Ski - Full Of Fitness" theme, a gem almost impossible to find elsewhere.

This set is a definite "must" amongst the dozens of other compilations available out there!.

at last a good overview of the Manfred's in the 60s
The problem with previous anthologies had been that they were either too extensive, thus overloading on the fluffier pop material recorded by the group, or they were not extensive enough and thus limited to only the groups' hit singles. Having long sought a suitable anthology of Manfred Mann's 1960s recordings, I had all but given up, when to the rescue comes Raven Records of Australia with this wonderfully designed double disc anthology covering the works of Manfred Mann phases I and II. The compilers at Raven have solved the problem by including all the hits from both early phases of the band (the Paul Jones years and the Mike d'Abo years as vocalists) as well as more interesting album cuts from both phases and numerous solo tracks by Paul Jones, Mike d'Abo, Mike Vickers (original guitarist), McGuiness Flint (with Vickers' replacement Tom McGuiness), drummer Mike Hugg, and Manfred Mann with Mike Hugg. All told the set includes 53 tracks and more than 150 minutes of music. 37 of the tracks are by the Manfred's (22 by phase I and 15 by phase II), and the remaining 16 tracks comprise the solo efforts mentioned above. The collection nicely blends the pop hits with bluesier and jazzier album cuts, making for an uneven but ultimately much more satisfying listening experience than the anthologies previously available. Furthermore, this is the first collection to combine the groups early EMI recordings with their phase II Fontana recordings. The sound quality is much improved over previous sets, and the 24-page color booklet is a drastic improvement over anthing previously available. Taken as a whole "All Manner of Men 1963-1969 and more . . . " is far and away the best collection of Manfred Mann's early works currently available. Here's to hoping Raven will now compile works of the three later phases of the group, since a suitable collection of their output is also sorely lacking. In the meantime pick up this compilation and enjoy some classic sounds of the 60s.
