Bonus tracks not exactly a bonus Find it on vinyl, tho'. Classic sounds from the legendary Brazilian musician and current Minister of Culture(!) If you're not familiar with his work, this is indeed a great place to start. The remastering doesn't do this record any favours, the "bonus" tracks aren't particularly enlightening, and whilst I realise this borders on sacrilege, the cover of "Sgt. Pepper", aside from the awesome guitar break, is, well, kind of awful. Sorry.
A psychedelic Brazilian/English pop gem from 1971
Do not miss this one! The two covers of Blind Faith's Can't Find My Way Home
are worth the price of admission on their own. It's just been reissued stateside at a reasonable price.
folkadelic
gilberto gil 1971 is the "come down" album, if you will. after the full out psychedelic assault of gil's 1969 album, the spaced out acoustic vibe of this 1971 album is a nice change of pace. the album is very similar (though slightly happier) in overall sound as caetano veloso's 1971 self titled album. at the time of recording, both men were political exiles living in england, so the somber acoustic tunes carry an additional weight. gil's cd begins with a very upbeat version of "nega". once that's over the space-folk begins. namely, airy acoustic guitars, gorgeous swirling vocals, sparse percussion. a perfect example is the disc's 3rd and 7th tunes ("the 3 mushrooms" and "one o'clock last morning. . . "). you also get to hear a new version of "volkswagon blues" which was recorded first on gil's 1969 album. it's nice to hear the song in stripped down acoustic form. (not that there was anything wrong with 1969's crazy psyche version. it's just cool to hear it in a different setting). so if you're interested in hearing the spaced out calm after the the psychedelic storm that was "1969", give "1971" a shot. you won't be disappointed.
