Guy that commented... Youre an idiot
Yes, Bedlam was a little different at first lisen, and i understand that whole taking a while for A MV album to get you but because it has so much to it. I've listened to The Mars Volta ever since they came out with De-Loused back in 2001, They are undoubtedly one of the best bands that have ever been, Top five even. When i fist got it i couldnt really listen to it fully without thinking it was i little disappointing but after much listening it gets just as great as amputechture. My Favorite song from bedlam Is definitely Metatron, that song is insane. And about the whole uninspired album. . ? you nuts? this album is actually based on an antique quiji board (dont knw how to spell it) that they got while in jerusalem, the board actually haunted and would terrorize the band, their studio was flooded countless times and many songs were lost forever. even strange noises would appear on some of their tracks. their technician actually went insane he was so spooked. Mars Volta puts insane effort nto their work and if they put out more albums the better. they dont just put together junk for the simple fact that all thats in it for them is money. its very obvious that they love making the music. Its odd how much stories surround this band in their real life and how they fuse it so well with their music. In de-loused it was a whole album about the thoughts of a dying friend while in a comatose, who finally ended up jumping out the window when he woke. Francis the mute, a strangers diary. Bottom line this band rocks. PERIOD.

Ehhhh... honest review.
What drew me in was their crazy sound. I am a huge fan of The Mars Volta, and have been ever since late 2005 when Frances came out. It was totally unlike ANYTHING I ever heard (of course I was just getting into metal and Prog rock at the time). I listened to De-Loused first and it was an amazing album. I've been listening to the band ever since. However, I'll remember the day that The Bedlam came out, and I rushed to the mall to buy it.

TMV's albums have always taken multiple listens to fully sink their teeth into me, and thus Amputechture is my favorite album. However, it's been over a year now. I've listened to The Bedlam in Goliath multiple times and I STILL can't get into it. I believe it wants to be a great album, but it can't.

Aberinkula is hands down the best track on the album. The last 2:45 alone are worth the time alone.

Metatron is a completely forgettable track. I've listened to it dozens of times and still can't remember how it goes.

Ilyena was OK. I liked the verse but the chorus was boring.

Wax Simulacra has a catchy chorus, that's it.

Goliath is another forgettable track. I liked the Led Zeppelin influence though.

Tourniquet Man is a short ballad, but feels incredibly out of place.

Cavalettas is a song that had potential to be an amazing song. It's like they were going in the right direction when they were making it but then they got to the chorus. . . rather disappointing.

Agadez had a good solo, but that's about it.

Askepios is nothing new. Same crap we've heard before.

Ouroborous is FINALLY a track that makes you go "OMG! THAT WAS FREAKING GREAT!!!!!!!!". Heavy, in-your-face, sounds like a lunatic on the verge of a mental breakdown while on a UFO sighting. Love it.

Soothsayer is a terrible song. The only song that sounds diverse, yet it's one of the worst.

Cojugal Burns is not a bad song. A good closer to what was a disappointing album.

I love The Mars Volta, but I am pretty disappointed with this disc. Don't get me wrong, I will still buy the next album, but I fear for them if they take a direction similar to this. I'll admit I have a love/hate relationship with the fact these guys write and record so quickly; on one hand we're getting new albums almost every year (or so it seems), on the other hand this album is completely rushed, uninspired and samey.
