Variety is a GOOD thing...
I do have the entire catalogue so I'm not a complete novice. Having been a fan of TMV for only about 3 years now (stunning considering I've been into PROG for a good 25 years), my comments may not be taken seriously by the die-hards.

I can't understand the complaining. Every release has had a different feel. I found it very refreshing to hear a toned down Volta. I love the chaos of Bedlam and the intricacy of FTM and so on but this gave me a chance to really hear their abilities as song writers. This often is well presented in more formulaic hook-driven music. There is enough chops here to give the hard-cores a chubby. This is no downward spiral I'm sure. Musicians (being one myself) have the same mood swings as any artist and perpetuate current moods by craft.

I dig this hell out of this CD and highly recommend it. I think this would be a good starting point to new fans. It's just odd enough to catch interest and melodic enough to not require 10 listens to absorb. Bravo.

Subdued but Extraordinarily Dense
Lay your expectations of a nostalgically repeating past of Deloused or Francis or whatever album you love coming back for another. Make no mistake by reading other reviews of this album- NO ONE, other than Mars Volta, could have made this album. The Mars Volta have focused their lens on an element of their style seen in part in every other album they have made (the slow, subtle, melodic)and extended it for a full length album that in my humble opinion, stands FOR WHAT IT IS as a masterpiece.
Buy the album. Open your mind. .

They did it again
And they are doing it. Here's the deal- bands like Volta, Queens, Mastodon, ISIS and so on have a job to do. From all those bands I treat each of their albums like children. I love them all equally but still have my favorite. I have a hard time deciding if Octahedron is my fav yet-Bedlem was my a few months after I jammed it 40 times. I find this to be the case with in the new album. With all their albums, actually. Cedric's lyrics on Octahedron are nothing less than BETTER then ever. I was reading about Alexander the Great when I heard Cedric mention the Gordian Knot and reminded myself-THEY KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE DOING. I'm a huge fan of good music. This is good music.

what the hell happened to this band?
if you don't believe me, listen to 'frances the mute' again. look, i'm all for a band changing styles from record to record, but the songs on this album are weak. then tell me that ANY of the songs on this record are on par with that album. i'm very sad actually, cause they used to be my favorite band. maybe next album.

Not what I thought
I've become rather distant from the band since their last few albums as they've become over produced. Ever since after Frances the Mute, Mars Volta has become something totally different. Just so much going on that most of the time I'm trying to find something enjoyable to what I'm hearing. If your a fan of De-Loused & F. T. M. you might not find this album to appealing to your palette. There are however some parts of this album I can find myself connecting to, but shortly after I'm wanting to change the track. This album is very laid-back, but not spectacular laid-back. Unless Volta finds that audience connection they once had, I'm finding myself & others slowly fading away from this once enjoyable group. .
