Aussie Surf Sound Looking around the web, generally the reviews have been positive for this CD, however it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. It was great getting the 6-track bonus disc of their classics, but this is meant to be a quick review of Garage. The album has a DISTINCT 1970's Brisbane surf sound, even though it was released in 1998. So after a couple of listens all I could think of was how dated it sounded.
If you are familiar with the band "The Riptides" (Mark Callaghan's pre-Gang Gajang band), you will know the type of surf sound I am talking about. The Mentals have released a great album in that genre, the only problem is, it's 20 years too late, and I really don't know if there's an audience for that sound anymore.
If you love the Mentals for their radio-friendly pop hits, you are far better-off getting a greatest hits collection. Garage is quite different-sounding to the mini bonus hits collection.
Don't get me wrong, Garage has some excellent, strong songs. The whole thing reeks of summer and the beach. I play this CD over and over while working at the computer. .
