They are legends, masters, almost Gods. Metallica can do no wrong by me.
Production on this sucks and that is the only reason I did not award 5 stars.


Heavy Metal as it SHOULD be
Anger well. Like many fans of the 'old' Metallica sound, the 90's and St. . just. . . hurt. And then the 'Some kind of Monster' video. . . ouch. And out comes Death Magnetic - happy days are here again! THRASH, albeit not quite the MOP or RTL-intense, we have a winner!

It is not a 'perfect' CD, and upon repeated listens, it holds up VERY well (unlike others that sound great at first, but fizzle by listen number 5). Bottom line is that this is a SOLID heavy metal CD, and it is great to hear the 'masters' do it up right. . . shame how time flies, and Metallica was considered in their 'prime' in the 80's when they were in their 20's and thrash was new, daring, cool. . . and they were IT. Here we are 20+ years since MOP, and what do we have? Metallica considered "old HM geeks trying to pawn off HM stuff on the masses?" Quite frankly, I think some fans would have preferred Metallica to take the AC/DC route of 'musical progression'. . . which is none, but heck, they would still sound like 'Sanitarium' today, right? Right. I am guilty, and some of you reading this might feel the same. . . however the other side of my brain wants Metallica (and other bands like them) to find a magical heavy new groove/sound/etc that is NOT a re-hash of their earlier stuff. I have felt this way about many metal bands that I have been fond of since the mid-70's that still exist today (IM, Judas Priest, Scorpions, etc) as well as the hair bands (Motley Crue, Poison, Great White, etc). I think rap-metal was an attempt (Korn, Staind, RATM, etc) to bring the metal sound 'forward', and I really do like a lot of it, but nothing quite does it like the ole IM/JP/Metallica riffs of days gone by (Where Eagles Dare, Breakin the Law, Creeping Death). After listening to the latest CD's from Metallica, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden and the like and hearing the 'sound' of classic heavy metal brought up to today's 'standards' and sound (as well as hipness on the lyrical end), I am one happy camper - glad to hear it isn't a 'so totally dead' thing.

So. . . the bottom line. . . this CD kicks a** and all Metallica fans should have this, as well as anyone who like the heavy metal sound. . . this is one first class flight the best of Heavy Metal. Crank it and ENJOY!

The real Metallica have returned...
Boy do they. You want heavy??? Metallica brings you heavy. . . This is the cd that should have been released after . . . And Justice For All or at least after the Black Album. Forget what you have heard and what you believe. You should give Death Magnetic a chance. This album is full of the guitar riffing that made Metallica famous from the beginning of their career. "All Nightmare Long" is the song that I personally have been waiting for over the past 10 years. "Broken, Beat and Scarred" will be a crowd pleaser for many live shows to come. 5 stars, hands down, start to finish this recording is great and only makes me yearn for a follow up that is as heavy. As far as performing these new tunes live, Metallica does not disappoint. "What don't kill ya, make ya more strong!".


Metallica Going Back to Old School??

Their music in the 90's went downhill. Ever since the black album came out, I pretty much stopped listening to Metallica. Death Magnetic is the first Metallica CD I bought since the early 90's and it seems that it is heading more towards the old school Metallica (i. e. and Justice for All, Garage Days,).

When Metallica decides to do another CD, I'm feel that it will be more heavier than Death Magnetic. They also need to get Flemming Rassmussen back to produce their music again as well. .


A return to form, sort of-excellent
This is a return to their thrashier roots, which was evident on st anger. Got this the day it came out last year and have loved it ever since. While st anger had a poor production and was rather sloppy, the band thrashed it up again on that release. One of the few that I know, that still enjoy it. Well Death Magnetic saw the band bring back the amazing solos and thrash elements, with a decent production. I think one of the big issues is kicking Bob Rock to the curb. I feel he was most responsible for changing their sound. Bring in Rick Rubin who basically says, guys listen to your first 3 records for inspiration for this new release. That was just your life races out the gates and is pure thrash as is the closer My Apocalypse, which has a riff from Damage Inc. in there-towards the end-it's a great throwback to the early days. Anyway the album is not perfect. There is still some load moments and the middle of the cd has some parts that do drag. However this is a great cd that is heavy and has James growling like he used to.
