origin of the mousei just wanted the chance to give this little weird and wonderful thing entitled "sad sappy sucker" five stars, cause it really deserves that if you ask me. .
look elsewhere for more rambling on about what's good and what's bad about this album - just keep in mind that this aint a dashboard floating on. . .
it's simply put the origin of the mouse - and all of the compositions found here could easily have been turned into awesome modest classics. . .
but that's the beauty of the album, cause we already have plenty of that on other albums, and so this one here instead provides us with an admirably wonderful little taste of and look into the amazingly creative madness of isaac and co. . .
if you already like "this is a long drive. . . ", i cannot imagine why on earth you would not enjoy this little one as well :O).
Why are some many audiophiles so condecending?
I am a die hard fan of this band, but this was the second CD i got, not the last puzzle piece in my collection. Why does everyone here say you have to love this band before you understand this album?
I Love this album. This CD pulled me into the awesome oddity that is Modest Mouse. So i say you don't need to know a whole lot about music or have every other song this band did to like this CD, it's just really good music.
Granted this is a different flavor compared to a lot that is out there, but it is great. .
Exclusive to fans? Maybe. Still worth buying? Yes.
But most of us didn't start listening to Modest Mouse because they hooked our ears. This is definitely not going to hook your ear like the new major label records will.
This album reminds me of Nirvana's "Outcesticide" records that were released to the gray market. It is a lo-fi collection of tunes that paints a portrait of the band's beginnings. It has a handful of gems that are unforgettable but wouldn't have fit on any of the other records. I would be very sad if I didn't have "Dukes Up", "Birds vs. Worms", or "It Always Rains On A Picnic".
I think that this album shows that Modest Mouse is willing to make its purist indie roots available to their fans even as they grow into their current semi-famous pop-idol status.
So, yes. You should buy this record. But only buy it for the right reasons. .
Probably for fans only...
It's a collection of some of the band's earliest work, much of it recorded well before their proper debut full-length in '96. Right of the bat, let me say that if you are not well aquainted with Modest Mouse's catalouge, you probably will not enjoy this album. This isn't a very accessible collection of songs. . . the sound quality is a little rough, and the musicianship and song-writing are choppy at times. The median age of the band was around 21 at this time, and it shows in the songs. However, fans of the band's later work will likely find this an interesting glimpse into the band's origins. You might not like all of the songs (the "dial a song" bits and demos clumped at the rear of the album are interesting at first, but do not reward repeated listens) but a handful of tracks (such as "Wagon Ride Return" and "Dukes Up") are punchy, energetic numbers that suggest the potentiol this band would later go on to fufill.
Those two songs are great, hands down (which boosts my over-all rating for this album to 3 stars). There are a handful of other decent songs that Modest Mouse fans will enjoy as well. I wouldn't consider this an essential purchase, however. . . there just aren't enough good songs to justify paying full price. If you can get it for cheap as a used disc (like I did), go for it. It won't cost much. Overall, this a decent relase; not great, but an interesting glimpse into the band's early days for fans. If you're not already familliar with Modest Mouse, though, you probably won't find much to interest you. But, if you one day find yourself to be a Modest Mouse fan, you might want to give this disc a spin.
Uh. haha.
If you're looking for an album to get you into Modest Mouse, then this definitely isn't it. Well, this album is pretty terrible, but I like it anyway.
Anyone else who would want it probably already has it. .
