Lopsided, but the first half is great
Nowhere near as heavy with the weight of mortality as their previous offering, this is a meaty power-pop record with the standard Mouse-eccentrities turned up to 11. Modest Mouse
We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank; 2007
Epic Records

My Rating: 60/100

Despite the nautically-doomed title, the Mouse proves with their fifth album proper that they will indeed float on. Themes are varying yet unified, meaning the record doesn't suffer from the monotony that sunk GOOD NEWS,and there's even a moment or two of jubilant quasi-optimism ("Dashboard", "Missed the Boat"). Unfortunately, the overall experience suffers from an extreme lopsidedness that will most likely have you switching to something else after track 7. In the final analysis, though, WE WERE DEAD BEFORE THE SHIP EVEN SANK is a nice recovery from the near disaster that was GOOD NEWS. I'll be looking forward to the next full-length offering from the Issaquah's finest.

Effing Great
The lyrics are troubled and perfect and comforting, the music alternates between ecstatic and messy in a great way. This CD is wonderful, and with each listen, little moments of bliss reveal themselves.

No doubt this is it.
Look out for Missed the Boat especially for special awesome.

Fading urgencies
Brock's vocals, now contrived when it used to sound unhinged, affirms how the group still may be capable of creating music from solid ingredients, though rarely combine all the flavors in satisfying measures. The follow up to their breakout album is neither outstanding nor terrible, often straddling a muddled line between trademark jarring, off-kilter sensibilities and radio-friendly catchiness with a more self-conscious approach then how they effortlessly merged that duality in the past.

Good music!
It hits on most songs though, and I like it. Like most other Modest Mouse records, this is an excellent disc, if erratic. It's more poppy than their previous releases, but I still think it's a good sound. Four stars.

Good buy minus one little scratch
I can deal with the one scratch for the price though. I bought this item "like new" assuming the cd would be scratch and skip free, but unfortunately it skips on the last song every time. .
