mountains best The interplay between the musicians, and the way the peice flows from one movement to another is more than sublime.
This is beyond all doubt the best version of nantucket slieghride ever recorded. This title was almost impossible to find for many years, so now that it is I would urge everyone who has any interest at all in Mountain to get this album.
Mountain Kills!! But Amazon's description......
The Amazon description (1997 release, extensive liner notes, etc. First things first. ) is flat out WRONG. What you get is a 1991 release that is remastered, but has minimal notes. I don't know what they are smoking over there in that department, but they need to slow down on the wacky tabacky comsumption. And now, the music. . . .
I think a good word for this is STAGGERING!! Mountain was definitely one of the best bands from the 69-72 era, and this disc is the proof. Great songs and tight playing. Even the 17 minute version of "Nantucket Sleighride" holds up. Highly recommended to even neophyte Mountaineers. TURN IT UP!!!.
You thought Cream could jam? This is the real deal
This is different. OK, so most of the late 60s guitar gods now sound like they were noodling aimlessly through the fog, and Clapton was one of the worst offenders.
Back then, Mountain were criticised as a poor man's Cream. But the big difference between this and, say, Wheels of Fire is that these guys actually listened to each other. It shows - Mountain explored the outer limits of their material together. And they don't just shove their instruments down your throat, they take you places with them.
This sort of music has never been done better than by this band.
And this, along with Flowers of Evil and Twin Peaks, shows them at their best: doing it live.
Jammin 70's style
Long Red has a great beat, Crossroader brings you the edge, and a good as any Nantucket Sleigh Ride, a long sentimental jam that they just don't make these days. A great show to add Leslie West's "big" guitar with Pappalardi/Laing/Knight's jamming ability into your collection. If you don't know Mountain, know that the sample tracks just hint at the great music. .
Skip this and buy the original studio versions!
Both these songs contain great chord changes, harmonies, and memorable lyrics, and combine super pop hooks with quality heavy rock musicianship. Mountain brought us two highly melodic and eminently listenable tracks in their heyday: "Nantucket Sleighride" and "For Yasgur's Farm". Tracks such as these laid the groundwork for future bands like Journey, Toto, and Mister Mister. However, this live album doesn't even hint at the true skill of Messrs West, Pappalardi, and Knight.
"Live" features boringly dull and repetitious solos; tedious ensemble playing; and weak singing -- all rendered through amps with the sound quality of those $49 jobs kids buy at WalMart. The playing is so lame in spots you'll wonder if you're actually hearing a warm-up band doing Mountain covers!
Please do yourself a favor: Skip "Live", and buy the albums "Climbing" and "Nantucket Sleighride" to hear what these guys really sounded like. .
