Approaching the summit of MBV
DO NOT BUY THIS ALBUM. . Unless, you want to be consumed by it.
Ecstasy & Wine has some of the best songs from MBV (The Things I Miss, Clair, You've got nothing & (Please) Lose yourself in me. . . AMAZING), actually, there is not a bad song on this compilation of the two ep's. It's definitely up there with both You made me realise and Feed me with you kiss ep's (Creation Records, circa 1988 - if you don't have these, you don't know the true power of MBV).

.

Allow me to second that opinion and more!
I got this when it came out, and saw MVB at the time live in London. Although the sonics may not be what one associates with MBV, this collection of the "Strawberry Wine" and "Ecstasy" EPs is great. They had just added Bilinda Butcher and this stuff was much fiercer live. "Claire" was actually the template for what they later did live with "You made me realise"; it was always extended with a 10 minute plus white noise workout that cleared (small) halls. When they signed with Creation and unveiled the "Cigarette in your bed" material at a Creation mini-festival in North London, it came as an incredible shock to C86-bashers. Who knew they had it in them?

As the above poster put it, Shields & co. have basically always been great pop-song writers, and in my (minority) opinion really lost the plot with "Loveless" which had revolutionary sampling and production techniques but lesser songs. An alternate history of MBV would focus on "Ecstasy and wine" and the Creation EPS ("Cigarette in your bed", "Feed me with your kiss", "Glider" and "To who knows when") all of which feature great non-LP songs that would have considerably strengthened the two "official" LPS. The Creation stuff is due to be re-released (eventually), but I would be surprised if Shields ever lets this out again, for record company reasons as well as his own high quality standards. But don't let that stop you from digging a great jangly, noisy pop gem, and from hoping an early live cassette pops up someday.

Excellent early MBV
Granted this is not up to par wit their finest work (which would probably be from the "You Made me Realise" single thru "Loveless"), but this is still an excellent collection of great songs from a great band. I cannot believe that I am the first person to review this. I am not a fan of the former incarnation of the band (with Dave Conway), but this is where the songwriting really begins to click. The songwriting is just phenomenal. I don't think Kevin Shields is capable of writing a bad song. They may not be as textured or foward-thinking a the later stuff, but these are still great songs. The Strawberry Wine EP is really the gem here. All 3 songs are well-written and melodic songs. Ecstasy has some beautiful pop gems like "She Love You No Less", "I Don't Need You" "You've Got Nothing". "Clair", sounds like it could've fit easily on "Isn't Anything" (which is a good thing). It only gets better from here folks. This is just the beginning of the brilliance. Every release from here on out gets progressively better and better. This is a must for any true MBV fan.
