THOUGHTFUL, MELLOW, FUN AT TIMES, SAD AT TIMES (Willie Nelson releases another enjoyable album)
Using Nashville session musicians instead of his "Family", the album has a somewhat different sound than is usual for Nelson, but Willie's trademark nylon-string guitar is prominent, and long-time harmonica sidekick Mickey Raphael provides familiar assistance, too. Willie Nelson's It Always Will Be (2004) is mostly a mellow effort, and finds Willie reflecting on relationships, old and new, and having a little fun, too.

Be That As It May (w/ Paula Nelson) is the album's first duet, and even though it's theme is stark and hopeless, it's very listenable. Dreams Come True (w/ Norah Jones) is excellent, and one of my favorites here. It's quiet and tender, the sort of song that that makes you feel that all the world has slowed down to a more comfortable pace, even if just for a moment. Overtime (w/ Lucinda Williams) is another winner, a song about a lost love.

I guess out of the blue
You won't cross my mind
And I'll get over you
. . . overtime

Willie loosens up and has some fun with the drunken I Didn't Come Here (And I Ain't Leavin') and the hilarious Big Booty. He reprises Texas, a Spanish guitar flavored tribute to his home state that he has recorded before, including a version on Highwayman 2. Tired, a blue-collar lament written by Toby Keith, but convincingly done here by Willie alone, both cuts deep and hits home.

Only missed six days and nights of twenty years of working
Money went to taxes and these bills I've paid on time
Raise I got six months ago don't meet the cost of living
Selling my body for these nickels and these dimes

Willie also does a respectable version of Gregg Allman's Midnight Rider (w/ Toby Keith) by making the song his own, rather than trying to outsing Allman (an impossible task).

As another reviewer mentioned here, the album cover perfectly represents the album itself. . . Willie and his guitar, both worn and wise, being naturally warmed by a ray of sunlight while a steady hand keeps it's place on the instrument, ready to play. . .

At the Top of His Game
The title track is a classic Willie Nelson ballad in the tradition of some of his greatest tunes of the past and is sure to join them. "It Always Will Be" is the CD right toward the top Willie's career thus far and the title song is just perfect for his voice. This ballad will probably become his second most famous song. When he sings a ballad you can feel the emotion come through the speakers and fill the room. You know he wrote the song from personal experience and his singing tells us he wishes to share that experience with us. He has shown us his talent is still in top form. This free spirited American Icon seems to have a great CD on his hands. I recommend it.

Willie, and his guitar, and his soul
" Willie's strong, handsome profile, the hard-earned lines on his face, his hand's loving caress on his guitar--the softness and sharp edges and warm light and deep shadows. Of all of Nelson's album covers, none has expressed the contents so perfectly as the cover of "It Always Will Be. Nelson has released many albums that serve as landmarks of American music--Red-Headed Stranger tops a long list--but none feel quite as personal to me as this gem. I get a sense of a man who has much more living to do, but has taken time to look back down the road and give us a sense of where he's been. The joys and romps and fears, triumphs and troubles--the achingly beautiful title track bookended by the rascally Midnight Rider: yes, Willie has been a lot of places, has had a lot of fun and endured a bit of pain, but the masterful simplicity of the music and strength in his voice show that he's a man who's learned a thing or two about himself and the world, and has many miles yet to go.

Willie at his best
Each song is a gift, a glimpse into the soul of this amazing man. I thought I'd heard it all but this album is the best. He speaks to loneliness, gratitude, commitment, contentment and self realization. One moment I'm moved to tears and the next moment I'm laughing aloud with Big Booty! If you're a Willie Nelson fan, this is a MUST have album. . . it doesn't get any better than this!.

Willie Does It Again
This album in no way is a departure from that statement. Willie Nelson and George Strait have one thing in common, musically speaking, everything they touch turns to gold. Honestly, what can one say about a Willie Nelson album that hasn't already been said. Great, Wonderful, Terrific, Classic, Masterpiece. The list goes on. This album will not dissappoint any fan of the man in pig tails.
