This one hits the spot I usually only purchase a "greatest hits" CD from a musician or band for whom I wouldn't bother getting a whole CD -- for fear of only enjoying half of it (and sometimes even less). When a band is as good as Newsboys, you really don't need a "greatest hits" CD. So instead I often look for a "greatest hits" or compilation CD. But NOT ASHAMED, GOING PUBLIC, and TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER are three of the very best Christian rock albums ever made available. With the fewest of exceptions, Newsboys' music is a tremendous joy to listen to.
And speaking of joy, the three new songs are thoroughly enjoyable as well -- "Joy" not being least among them. "Praises" is an exceptional praise song as well as a lively Christian rock staple. "Who" begs the classic apologetics' questions and answers with typical Newsboys wit.
My only disappointments with SHINE: THE HITS are few. But they begin with the inclusion of "Woohoo" from STEP UP TO THE MICROPHONE. "Woohoo" is just not a good song. From the STEP UP album, "Deep End" or "Hallelujah" would have been much better choices. Also "God is Not a Secret" was one of the best songs from TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER". Having Toby Mac perform guest vocals on that song does it no justice whatsoever. Newsboys' and DC Talk's sounds are radically different from each other. Lastly, "I Got Your Number" is an enjoyable classic from the old, old days of the Newsboys. I would have preferred "Kingdom Man". But they're both pretty good songs.
All in all, SHINE: THE HITS is a great compilation CD for both the die-hard Newsboys fan as well as the casual listener. But I suppose that could be said of almost all Newsboys CDs.
ALL THE HITS AREN'T HERE
They could have pre-empted the overbearing "I Got Your Number" and the Mega-Mix for engaging #1 songs like "Truth or Consequences", "Real Good Thing" and "Let It Go". Certainly its a worthy collection of Newsboys hits but for the record there are quite a few missing.
Other skipped Top 10 hits include:
Strong Love
Beautiful Sound
One Heart (their 1st hit in 1991)
Good Stuff
Be Still
Love, Liberty Disco (no loss not having that one!)

It's hard to underestimate the effect this album had on my life.
I've listened to it hundreds of times, and my first copy is pretty worn out. I think this was the first Christian rock album I received, a long, long time ago. But every time I listen to it, as I am right now, I remember how enchanted I was when I first heard it, and I relive it. What a great album, probably my one of my absolute favorites. My favorite song is "Shine" but only by a narrow margin. These songs are all joyful and worshipful, and in my opinion this is the best Christian rock album made to date. .
A Great Greatest Hits For A Great Band
"Breakfast" is one of the greatest songs of all time, and classic Newsboys. The Newsboys is a great 90's band, not so much in the new millenium, but in the 90's, the ruled. There's so many great songs on here, and they did a great job with the song selection. And there's new tracks, the best of which is "Joy". The song definitely shows the sound of the band in the new millenium. O, did I forget "Mega-Mix"? Great re-mix song that covers most of the songs on the album. It would have been great to see the re-mix album done with expanded mixes herd here, but this is a great addition to the album.
Overall, a great greatest hits album, for a great band. They did them well around this time, and even though they didn't have bonus DVD's, I would still recommend getting this. There's a new greatest hits collection coming out this fall, that'll have a DVD, but it won't have the quality of songs found here. They'll leave out some great songs, and they won't have my buy. But this is great.
