Newsboys transcendent. No other of their albums came close to the sound they perfected here. Far and away the greatest album the Newsboys put out. It's hard to explain, but there's a definite edge, not really grunge, not really punk--maybe something indie, dance, or European, but the pop-sensibility is there too, with a dose of techno (plus some weird rock/hip-hop fusion on John Woo and bawdy blues-iness on Giving It Over). Whatever it is, it works, and it transports you and gets inside your soul with its catchiness and its cleverness and its beauty. This was the height of the Newsboys' career as far as I am concerned, and while their stuff after was really sharp and well-produced, and just as addictive as anything they'd ever done, it lacked the punch and vigor of Thrive. A true masterpiece.
Newsboys - Thrive
It is their best album since "Take Me to Your Leader" (1996), to which it is most similar stylistically. "Thrive" (2002) is the ninth album by Christian pop/rock band Newsboys.
Steve Taylor is back writing lyrics for the Newsboys, and man, does it make a difference. They aren't any less "Christian" than what the Newsboys have written on their own, but they're infinitely more clever. They're downright entertaining to listen for.
The songwriting is what puts this album over the top, though. There's not a bad song on this album. The rhythms and the tunes are catchy, and a lot more memorable than anything the Newsboys have done since "Take Me to Your Leader". .
Fabulous!
Thrive is definantly one of the best newsboys albums to date, from the opening riffs of Giving it Over to the infectious chorus of Million Pieces and to the pure worship of It Is You and Lord this CD has to be in my top three newsboys records, Go and Take me to Your leader are still tied for first.
I love, love, love, love, LOVE this album!!
Then I just quit buying Newsboys albums~ well except the one with the hits. Well five years after this album was put out, and I'm just now buying it? What the heck is wrong with me???? I mean I bought Not Ashamed when it first came out, and I loved it to death~I bought Going Public when it first came out, and I loved it to death~ I bought Take Me to Your Leader when it came out, and I loved it to death.
This music is so gorgeous and so well done. Some of the lyrics make me laugh; some bring tears to my eyes. Totally inspiring and so beautiful!! Well, I'll catch up and buy and comment on the other ones when the infatuation for this one wears off.
