Olivia's first Australian compilation This 12 track album contains every early hit. Released way back in 1975, "First Impressions' saw a young Olivia Newton John already with a remarkable list of hits in Australia. The inclusion of her cover of "Amoreuse" is reason alone to buy it . . . it's nice. Different to Kiki Dee's version, but definitely worth a listen.
ONJ's early output proves to be just as admirable as later hits...
Her cover of Bob Dylan's "If Not for You" (an unlikely match-up!) was her first actual hit, and despite a repetitous twang, it's very pretty. Minus a few pop hooks, Livvy's early selections are winning and airy, if slight, country-lite performances. "Banks of the Ohio" is a little bit out of Olivia's grasp, but John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is right up her alley. "Let Me Be There", "If You Love Me (Let Me Know)" and "I Honestly Love You" are here to snag hits-listeners, and they still sound great after these many years, but it's the other, less heard songs which grabbed me. A minor collection, to be certain, but an entirely pleasant one.
