Truly totally hot.
It didn't break the mould as far as Olivia Newton-John albums went but it did what she'd be doing for years even better. 'Physical' is just one of those right time/right place sort of albums.

Well, let's talk about the lead single, the title track. I doubt that even today there won't be many people who don't know it. At the time it was over-played to the point of insanity and was probably the beginning of the end for Olivia. 'Physical' was one of those singles that everybody bought but no-one liked much! Even amongst Olivia's diehard fanbase it's rarely up there in the best song polls unlike, say, 'Magic' or 'A Little More Love'.

The second single, 'Make A Move On Me' hit #5, another sizable hit but it's the 3rd single, 'Landslide', that's THE song on the album for me. It was the opening track on side 1 of the LP and was as remarkable and astounding as 'Please Don't Keep Me Waiting' had been on the 'Totally Hot' album 3 years previouly. 'Landslide' was perhaps too complex for single release, indeed it only made #52, but it's one of her best vocal performances, and I say that knowing that the song is perhaps too much for her, and was the last truly great song John Farrar was ever to write for her.

'Stranger's Touch' was first rate again. It was wasted as a B-side but would've probably made a better 3rd single than 'Landslide'. Another Farrar song 'Recovery' is a true classic. Decidedly strange, just check out the video, the multi-tracked harmonies are heavenly.

Barry Gibb's 'Carried Away' is perfect Olivia balladry. Allegedly dropped from the Streisand 'Guilty' sessions, Bab's loss is definitely Olivia's gain.

Farrar's 'Falling' is another fan fave but I've never been that fussed about it. It uses the top end of O's quavery, whispery voice too much and (as I found out to my cost) reduces non-Olivia fans to hysterics!

Olivia's only self-penned tune, 'The Promise (The Dolphin Song)' was a sign of things to come. Simpering vocals paired with a syrupy melody and topped of with cringy lyrics that make you want to heave. Olivia was always much better when she didn't 'care!'

The rest of the album could be classed as filler, although it's high quality filler. Olivia's vocals are excellent throughout. There's little of the silly squawks and hideous shrieks that occasionally adorn 'Totally Hot' and pretty much run all the way through 1985's disastrous 'Soul Kiss'. The production and songs are perfection too. Olivia was never more at the top of her game than here and never more current.

If you're going to buy one ONJ album, get 'Totally Hot' and if you like that get this. Put aside tragic memories of 'The Rumour', 'Soul Kiss', 'Warm And Tender' and 'Gaia'and listen to Olivia when she really cared and put her back into her work.

A SOLID POP ALBUM
This album stands the test of time because of its inovative production and interestingly structured songs about the environment getting physical and love lost. This was Olivia's most daring album. This album is a treat for Olivia's fans from the post Grease days. The album is catchy and a smoothe listen.

Awesome
This album is excellent. Olivia Newton-John really knows how to kick out the jams. Something to really enjoy.

Physical is one of my phavorites
The title track may seem a bit goofy, and it was overplayed in the early 80s, but the album as a whole is really good. Most ONJ fans, myself included, rank Physical as one of Olivia's best releases. The uptempo songs are full of energy and there's a fire in her voice, and the ballads are soulful and her voice is extremely genuine in tone and timbre. An outstanding CD from beginning to end. If you're looking for an Olivia CD beyond a greatest hits compiliation, this is a very good one to check out. "Landslide" and "Make A Move On Me" are two of my favorites from her entire repertoire. Other standout tracks include "Love Make Me Strong," "Silvery Rain," "Promise," and the well-known title track, "Physical. ".
