Livvy's Christmas WishMy favorite songs were Every Time It Snows,A Mother's Christmas Wish,Instrument Of Peace,Christmas On The Radio, A Gift Of Love and of course the religious selections sung by her and the instrumentals. I really enjoyed the cd!The only song I did not care for was All Through The Night with Michael McDonald(formely of the group The Doobie Brothers)I think it would of been better for Olivia to sing it alone.
Christmas Perfect!
The blend of old and new is seamless, enhanced by musical interludes that make for a unified "piece," setting a peaceful and celebratory tone for the Holidays. This album has quickly become one of my favorite Olivia albums. I am especially fond of the many new songs, that while maintaining the holiday spirit (Little Star of Bethlehem, Every Time It Snows, Angels In the Snow) make this CD much more than just a typical, "cranked-out" CD where a performer "phones in" your favorites. It is also obvious that Olivia knows her voice at this stage in her career and uses it to its full potential, for which, as a fan I must say, I am very grateful. .
Odd Holiday Album From 1970's Songbird
For longer than a decade, devoted Newtophiles such as myself have purchased each one, waiting for a return-to-form. This strange album of holiday tunes from 1970's hitmaking songbird Olivia Newton-John is the next link in a chain of peculiar albums, seemingly designed to keep confused consumers wondering what on earth could be next. Bizarre albums such as "Gaia", bargain bin constant "Stronger Than Before", subpar concert recordings, and an album of pointless duets are filling our shelves, never to be listened to again. Although I love the lady, I wish I could sit down with her at a table and discuss her future recording projects with her. A small but vocal minority of fans are so eager to praise every dewdrop from her flower, that perhaps she no longer has any objective people with whom to discuss such things.
The current offering from Newt is. . . no kidding. . . more than TWENTY holiday tunes. Upon first listen, they all seemed to blend into one another, even the duets. However, I was determined to give the album more than a fair chance- especially after paying retail. Upon the second listening, it took every once of my willpower to stay seated until it was over. Perhaps this may be pleasant music if I were hearing it play over a department store's sound system while doing holiday shopping. Or, a track on the radio, in the month of December. But to sit down and pay undivided attention to the album as a whole is not a pleasant experience.
Other Newtophiles may disagree, but, I must bravely post an honest review.
The most upsetting aspect, to me, is the loss of what could be her final years as a recording artist. Her voice may be frayed at the edges- but it is still what I would describe as "servicable". It would still be possible for her to record some albums that are both artisticly satisfying to her, as well as being of use to long-time fans.
I do hesitate to mention a singer's physical apperance when composing a review, because one should never confuse physical beauty with vocal talent. However, I will take a rare vacation from this rule to state that Newt looks lovely on the CD's package artwork. Looking deeply into her eyes in the cover shot, one can almost get a feeling that she is silently pleading for someone to help her with her recordings.
My "Christmas Wish" is for the year 2010 to see a worldwide Newt revival, with a great new album. Newt- I know you've still got it in you. Please come back. .
Absolutely Stunning!!!!
A must for anyone wanting a beautiful, uplifting Christmas CD. Olivia Newton-John sings like an angel. Just beautiful!!!!.
Another Great Christmas Offering From A Modern Master
If you like Olivia's music, buy this. I'll be brief with this one. It will be a great addition to your collection, even if you already own the Christmas album that Olivia and Vince Gill made for Hallmark, and the Christmas CD that she released almost a decade ago.
