I want to like it, but... I was glad to see them coming out with a new studio recording and had high hopes. Night Ranger was the first concert I went to and I've enjoyed their music for over 20 years. I just think they could've done so much better than this. I've listened to it a few times, trying to see if it grows on me, but it just leaves me disappointed. There are a few good songs but, overall, it seems like their best days are behind them. I hate to say that, because they're a great live group (I saw them a couple of years ago, with . 38 Special) and I've enjoyed their last couple of studio offerings, especially NEVERLAND. The two acoustic remakes (Don't Tell You Love Me, Sister Christian) are pretty good, but it's time to quit living in the past, guys, and deliver up some new classics. If they release anymore albums, I'll definitely check them out and hope for better material, but I doubt I'll listen to Hole In The Sun very much. .
BEWARE: Night Ranger in NAME ONLY
It sounds nothing like Night Ranger. If you are a fan of Night Ranger, SKIP THIS ALBUM. Jack Blades barely sings a single song. It is actually probably worse than the "Feeding off The Mojo" album that came out with only Kelly Keagy, Brad Gillis, and some guy named Gary Moon.
Clearly this album is an attempt to soothe Gillis and Keagy's egos, since Night Ranger has pretty much become "Jack Blades' Night Ranger" as far as live performances go. They sing the majority of songs on this album, and probably wrote them as well.
I am incredibly disappointed with this album, and after a few listens, will likely NEVER listen to it again.
.
Evolving but I'm not really that pleased....
This is not some rock masterpiece or even a great one. I'm surprised by some of the high marks given here of 5 stars. It is what it is and that is slightly cutting edge Melodic rock that sees Jeff Watson possibly playing on his last N. R album after his abrupt dismissal.
However, It appears I am in the minority among the hard-core Night Ranger fans thus far. Time will tell.
Not sure what happened here? I know Night Ranger wants to evolve & change the sound & style from album to album and they always have to some degree.
Onto my very first impression & emotion. Disappointment.
A full three solid listens and my second impression & emotion. These guys are so much better than this!
I've had a long time now to TRY and let this album grow on me and I STILL favor "Neverland", "Seven", and even "Feeding off the mojo" more than this release. Those other releases certainly get played much more often by me.
Ultimately I find them more inspiring and enjoyable.
Hole in the sun is fast and hard in a lot of spots, and the solos can be furious (but most leave me rather uninspired).
So many other times these guys would take you on a musical ride and with the solo(s) they'd be blasting you off to a sonic high.
It sometimes just seems like its music by the numbers here. This stuff just doesn't seem to inspire me or give me any musical goose bumps like they've done in before.
The hooks/melodies are good in spots. Jack Blades has a definite knack for them and tosses in some good lyrics too but sometimes they make me cringe a bit.
I will say this much. Gone are the days I would purchase a Night Ranger disc on impulse. I'll need to do some very careful scrutinizing from here on out. I'll definitely wait until a US distributor is found so I don't pay $25-35 for a halfway decent release at best.
Night Ranger a Hole in the Sun
This is not a bad thing for a number of reasons. This long awaited Night Ranger album shows a definite influence from current popular music.
1) The feel of the album is still very Night Ranger.
2) The newer sound might help attract younger listeners.
3) The growth of the band as musuicians is clearly evident.
"White Knuckle Ride" is especially good, (my personal favorite)both addressing alchohol abuse, and rocking the house.
"Tell Your Vision" is also very good, a classic Night Ranger opening song showcasing the newer sound, without the angry, deppressing lyrics so common in today's music.
My only dissapointment is the lack of lyrics in the jacket, a minor annoyance.
All in all, a must-buy album.
Thank you,
Tim Cagle.
Great Album, but nos agood as previous ones.
However, even when this album has some excellent songs, is lacking some of the creativity that other have. This album is great, and it rocks! I have been a Night Ranger Fan for more than 20 years, and I love everything they do.
Don't misunderstand me, I would gladly buy this album again, in fact, I strongly recommend that you do so, You won't regret it, but I think that their previous records were better than this one.
It has some very catchy songs, and the guitars are impressive, as they have always been. The lyrics are very good too. I don't think it will be close to be one of the best albums of Night Ranger, but it is worth buying.
