Pretty Dissappointed He used to be a HUGE Harry Nilsson fan. I bought this for my husband for his birthday. My husband only recognized 3 or 4 songs on the CD. He used to have 5 of his albums, so we didn't think you could really call it Harry Nilsson's "Greatest Hits". .
Without Harry
This recording is a fairly comprehensive sampling of his body of work. Harry Edward Nilsson III aka Johnnny Niles when he recorded a song called "Donna" left us far too soon. From the famous movie tune "Everybody's Talking" to the goofy lyrics of "Coconut" to the old standard " As Time Goes By" to his most famous hit "Without You" (written by Badfinger's Peter Ham and Thomas Evans and also covered by Heart on their album Magazine). He also wrote music for the TV show "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" among his other various projects. Who knows what else a man who had albums such as "Schmilsson" and "Son of Schmilsson" could have acheived. We'll unfortunately never know. We miss you Harry.
Harry we miss you...
Harry, if you're reading this, we're still listening 'ole friend!
# # #. Harry Nilsson, a passionate man, the artist, the writer, the singer, the musician, and most of all, the faithful friend who enriched the lives of countless millions.
Beautiful voice, seriously underrated artist
Nilsson was fabulous and is so under-appreciated today, though I can't figure out why. I have all of Harry's albums in vinyl and then re-purchased them in the CD format, but this is the best, most eclectic and definitive sampling of his musical catalog. His voice is timeless and his songs are treasures. I loved him as a child in the 70's and grew up on his dulcet-toned voice filtering through the house. I figured anyone that hung out with Ringo and John Lennon had to be the apex of cool, and he certainly was that.
This album encompases his greatest hits as well as some of his lesser known ballads. Not only could Harry write beautiful songs, he sang some awesome cover versions, such as "As Time Goes By," which would give even Dooley Wilson a run for his money. A stellar, poignant performance.
I think the most lovely track here is "Remember," which had a brief revival when it was included in the trivial Tom Hanks movie, "You've Got Mail. " This introduced Nilsson to a generation who was robbed of his talent through his premature and untimely death. This is a good collection of his work. I can't imagine anyone with good taste not appreciating this man's body of work. Beautiful stuff.
The best Nilsson Collection
Nilsson was fabulous and so under-appreciated today. There are currently three Nilsson Greatest Hits packages and this is by far the best selection of songs, with no conspicuous omissions. I figured anyone that hung out with Ringo and John Lennon had to be the apex of cool, and he certainly was that. This album encompases his greatest hits as well as some of his lesser known ballads. Not only could Harry write beautiful songs, he sang some awesome cover versions, such as "Over the Rainbow," which would give even Judy Garland a run for her money.
