Customer Reviews
Explosive surreal and inventive & songs are good too!
i think (without having to check) its their 3rd album (alright i did just check!). Contrary to the first persons review, this is not their first album or greatest hits, although there are great songs on it. Ive heard their 2nd 3rd and 4th albums and thankfully for this one they've abandoned a lot of the complexity in their arrangements for the sake of shorter more catchy songs. But you won't have any "I love you baby" stuff on it. In fact the lyrics are surreal and mysterious but accessible. (Although sometimes I don't know what the heck he's talking about!) Vocalist (and main songwriter) Walter Seyffer conjures up such colorful dream like states-The last song "MOMENT" has to be heard to be believed; Never have I been so easily transported into such a wonderful surreal world! a real pretty song. Theres a certain nostalgic achingness and pain in the lyrics and music also. The music in some parts reminds ME of a song or two that I've heard from New York Dolls or even Guns and Roses' music to a certain degree. Thier sound is very 1970's and a quick comparison would be the band Nektar. But theres A LOT more going on than the aforementioned bands. I've heard they used to dress up in their glam clothes even while not performing. The album is a real treat for the ears. For one thing the music is psychedelic and has some krautrock going on. The use of chugging synthesizers and keyboards on some songs adds an ethereal edge to the raw and sleazy music. And the use of piano, flute, and sax on some songs add even more color. A good sense of humor is also laced on some tracks. These guys, on this album, do rock out, but in a very tapered way; meaning they don't compromise on song quality for the sake of jamming out. The musicianship is quite good except for the drummer who's a bit weak but does the job! The guitar tone (when not acoustic) is sleazy and the vocals are upfront and often doubled or delayed and the production is pretty clean. All in all its a very unique album and one of my favorites.
