Just received my third No Doubt album (in the mail).September 19th, 2009
. . Tragic Kindgom being my first about seven years after its release, and Return Of Saturn in June 2006.
1. InTro * A snippet of the last track, Rock Steady. (3)
2. HeLLa gOOd * Lots of attitude and very dance-able. I didn't like this when it was out but I like it a lot now. Probably my favorite track on the album. Closer to a 4. 25. (4)
3. Hey BabY * The first single off the album. Catchy, and was my favorite with Running back in 2001. Features Bounty Killer. (3. 5)
4. MaKing OUt * Surprisingly, this song is funner than "Hey Baby" to me. I never heard it until this year, shortly before I got the album. (4)
5. UnDerNeaTh IT alL * A nice, relaxing track with a slight Jamaican vibe to it. The third and final single off the album in the US. Love the bridge. (4)
6. DetectiVE * Kinda fun, but more on the filler-ish side. Some say it has a dark vibe to it but I don't really hear it. It's just kinda quiet. (3)
7. DoN'T lEt me DoWn * A solid track. (4)
8. StarT thE FirE * Filler, filler, filler. (2. 5)
9. RuNNing * The only ballad on the album but doesn't feel like one of their strongest ones. It's a good song but a bit repetitive. (4)
10. In MY HeAd * Would have been better without the crazy chorus. . . the lyrics are alright and the vibe during the bridge is good. But that chorus where she almost shrieks is annoying. But I get what she tried to do. It's just kinda grates on the nerves if you know what I mean (for those who have heard it). (3)
11. PlaTinuM bLoNdE liFe * Feels like No Doubt. Guitars are full (for once) and it just makes you happy that they didn't completely go off course. Closer to a 3. 75. (4)
12. WAitinG rOom * Different for a No Doubt album. But so are most of these tracks. It's alright I suppose. (3. 5)
13. RoCk StEadY * One of the better tracks on the album. It has some blips and bloops in it but it feels so chill. A great outro to the disc. I love the ending "Hee Oo"'s. So chill. . . Longest track on the album. Closer to a 4. 25. (4)
The big problem with this record in comparison to the last two is that it seems a bit amateurish. Gwen Stefani and the clan go for a bit of a more shallow audience, and some of the dedicated fans probably got used to it, but others I have noticed didn't quite gel with it (although to be fair, some have still found solid tracks here). All in all, it is a disappointment for your average No Doubt fan but it was something to tide us over until next year when they (hopefully) come harder with their 6th studio album.
Raw score: 3. 307692308
Final score: 3 stars.
end note: Maybe there are a few too many blips and bleeps on this disc, but overall, I don't think it's that bad. However, for a modern No Doubt CD I must admit I am a little disappointed (but not terribly so). Some tracks are filler but there are some good tracks also.
Great Album, Crap delivery
Hella Good is one of the best albums from No Doubt. . Couldn't stop listening to it.
I had order this cd and it was quoted to arrive in 5-7 business days. When the arrival date came and pasted and called and complained. After some resistance from th customer care agent he finally agreed to send me my cd's by expedited FedEx. The first set of cd's didn't arrive until another week later. I advise to never have something like that to arrive my US Mail. It is a nightmare.
"Let's talk about Gwen Stefani..."
Gwen can't sing but the band rock! Gwen is all about image and looking good (which she rarely achieves) she knows her voice is lacklaster and that's why the only thing she can focus on is the materalistic BS! Rock Steady has too many producers and not a clear and simplistic sound. Rock Steady by No Doubt is their last studio album before Gwen went solo, and boy that was biggest mistake she ever made. Songs I do like include: Platinum Blonde Life, Don't Let Me Down, In My Head, Hella Good, and Running. The rest of the tracks are over-played and filler. Hopefully the band will reunite in years to come but the talent and success doesn't go to Gwen, it goes to the hard-working and under-appreciated guys.
Pop
This CD is too much of a detour from their traditional sound, but it is pretty good anyways.
Some Doubt Remains
The album begins with some catchy, energetic tunes: Hella, Hey Baby, Making Out. Rock Steady by No Doubt is a mixture of good tracks with some rather fluffy, insubstantial, not too creative stuff. Underneath it All is a slower, crooning tune. Thereafter, the album doesn't really have much punch. Detective is kinda catchy, but also silly. Don't Let Me Down and In My Head and light and bouncy. Platinum Blonde Life has a good rock edge and is a good tune to have toward the end for some balance. Overall, a very listenable album, but doesn't register too much impact on the listener. Tragic Kingdom was more forceful.
