Come on, let's be honest: this is god awful.I know a lot of the hardcore punk and metal fans will hate what I have to say and will completely disagree with me on this review, but I think any NOFX fan who got into them after perhaps "White Trash. . " would be completely shocked by what they hear on this cd.
Anyone who has ever listened to a lot of old punk can fully expect any punk band on an independent label to have a first album that doesn't sound great, or doesn't fully portray the kind of music that they will eventually create. All of that is an incredible understatement for what this album is. I have never heard a cd with worse sound quality. Beyond that, it's just a terrible album. Even if this had the slickest production ever, it would still be bad. This is clearly before NOFX had any idea about what they wanted to do yet. They weren't fully competent on their instruments, they didn't have El Hefe, and they had no concept of or desire to create any melody, whether it be vocally or through the instruments. Fat Mike couldn't sing at all yet.
Long story short, this album will either be loved or hated. There will be no real middle ground. You will either get it and appreciate it for what it is or despise it. Anybody wanting melody or a relatively crisp, clean sound will be horrified. Anybody into thrash punk that sounds like it was recorded live in a garage will think this is the greatest album ever. Maybe if I get real real drunk and feel like crashing through a window or two, I will put this album on. Until then, I will skip any track from this cd that comes up when I put on the "shuffle" function on my IPod. For diehard fans only.
raw, fast, funny, punk
Thats how punk should be. . and NOFX did it in a great way. NOFX's second album is lyrically hilarious because the issues aren't dealing with politics. Mike's voice is definately not for everyone and this is way before it got great but if you are a true punk fan you should really enjoy this. The best songs are Shut Up Already, Here Comes The Neighborhood, A200 Club (hilarious song about having crabs), Mr. Jones, Vegetarion Mumbo Jumbo and the weird I Live In A Cake. It does have its weak points like towards the end it kind of sucks and the songs Freedumb and Sloppy English just aren't that good. I'd reccommend this if you have/like S&M Airlines or Ribbed.
Cool album.
It's not quite as good as 'White Trash, Two Heebs And A Bean' or 'So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes', but it's still a good CD. It ain't anything great, in my opinion. The lyrics can be kind of rediculous, but that's the fun of NOFX. Rediculous, bratty, funny lyrics. Anyway, I guess I'll do a song by song review.
Shut Up Already - 8/10 - At first, I hated this song with a passion. But, it slowly grew on me and now I listen to it quite alot.
Freedumb - 10/10 - Great song. It's short and simple, but I completely agree with it. It's about how stupid censorship is, and Mike's right. Kids hear 'bad words' everyday, so there's no reason to censor them.
Here Comes The Neighborhood - 7/10 - Not one of my favorites, but I like the lyrics. Kind of thrashy.
A200 Club - 8/10 - Disgustingly funny.
Sloppy English - 10/10 - One of my favorites on the album. Pure punk rock awesomeness.
You Put Your Chocolate In My Peanut Butter - 5/10 - Though it kind of bores me, it still has decent lyrics.
Mr. Jones - 10/10 - My other favorite on this album. 'Tis a bit creepy, but it's cool.
Vegetarian Mumbo Jumbo - 9/10 - Like 'Shut Up Already', it bashes vegetarians. I think it's better than SUA, though.
Beer Bong - 8/10 - Stupid, but fun.
Piece - 8/10 - Those peace punks can be quite hypocritical sometimes. Ha!
I Live in a Cake - 7/10 - Cool song. I just wish it was longer.
No Problems - 7/10 - See the above comment.
On The Rag - 8/10 - This song is pretty relatable. I like it.
Truck Stop Blues - 10/10 - My other favorite on the CD. It has an amazing guitar solo.
So, all in all, this isn't anything amazing, but if you're a fan of hardcore punk, you'll really dig this. It's worth the 10 bucks I paid for it! Oh, and if you like this, I suggest that you check out the Circle Jerks CD 'Group Sex' as well. If that CD was thrashier, then it would be like this one. Hehe.
(. . . ).
"old NOFX"
I don't like it as much as Ribbed or White Trash, but Liberal Animation is actually a really good album. everyone says Liberal Animation sucks, so of course I avoided it but one day I was out to buy a NOFX cd and they didnt have the one I wanted so I bought this. Not every song on here is good but I love "Shut Up Already" "Freedumb" "A200 Club" "Sloppy English" "Beer Bong" "Piece" and "No Problems", the rest are good but I'm not nuts about them. OH YEAH HOW COULD I FORGET "MR JONES" is probably one of NOFX's best songs.
If you like "Pump Up The Valuum" "Heavy Petting Zoo" that stuff (which I like too. . . I'm ashamed to say) then you probably won't like this cd that much but it's very good for those that are into the really fast hardcore stuff.
Don't listen to those who downplay this album
The sound here is very harsh, not for pussies. This is the type of album for all of us punk fans to thrash around to. The guitar work will blow you away, and Fat Mike writes the funniest lyrics! Get this if you like thrash punk with a silly twist. Actually, this may appeal to some metalheads too, so if you're into 80's metal you'll be impressed with the speed thrash and metallic riffs that show everywhere on this album.
Do not listen to those who downplay this album. This is weird but unique and in-your-face hardcore, not the pop-punk stuff they've been putting out since after this release. It may not have the best production quality, but on the other hand it is very raw and will kick your a$$. Go out and buy this if you know what's good for you.
