One of the few times NOFX really hit the nail on the head.
They are a fun band, that had some good songs, but in general nothing too terribly impressive in the general scope of music. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big NOFX fan, but I realize that they are pretty sophomoric, and uninspired in general. A common thread amongst many "punk" bands.

But sometimes, along their nearly three decade journey, they come out with a song, or an album that really captivates a person, sometimes its in a simple way, with a special brand of NOFX sometimes angry, sometimes silly punker, like the whole punk in drublic album, and sometimes its more complex.

The decline is, as is stated time and time again, the best of NOFX. Its really a very odd little album, very unlike anything they had done before. The social/political commentary is a little scattered, and random, but they lyrics come through pretty well, some (especially at the end) are really quite good, and the music while simple was really well orchestrated. The music bolstered the words, and in parts really brought home the feeling of power and anger and sort of desperation that the lyrics were bringing. It's never boring, and sometimes sweeping.

I think that NOFX at their best are an "emotional" sort of punk rock, unlike a band like Bad Religion, which I would consider more cerebral. NOFX in "The Decline" really reached the peak of that kind of music. It feels like screaming from the heart, it's pleading for answers.

If you like punk rock or fast, rough, emotional music, even if you don't like NOFX, I would highly recommend this album/song.

P. s. I also found that to be fully appreciated its best to listen to this song with headphones on, in the dark if you can, so you can really get lost in it. Ive suggested it to several, with good results from each. .

Can't even describe...
Epic, long, "just one song? What a rip off. So it's all been said about this song. " That all aside, this is the NOFX magnum opus. The various musical and lyrical themes blend into possibly the only punk song over 4 minutes long that isn't painful to listen to and is even on the very enjoyable side. I feel that their discography is better previous to and including The Decline and newer albums have lost the edge and wittiness that the old ones had, but they are all a good listen. Amazingly, NOFX is now playing this live! The CD is awesome, but having them hit the stage and open with more than 18 minutes of The Decline is an astounding experience. From the frantic opening bass line to the desperate "Mel Yell" injections throughout to the ominous quasi-goose-stepping outro it is a aural piece everyone should experience.

"He's got his and I've got mine, meet the decline. ".

You cant compare
It is and will always be one of my favorite songs. Nada, nothing could even come close to this song. This song is any real punk fans fravite song. Let's just say if you don't like 18 mins of the best punk rock band going full at it, your taste in music SUCKS. This is the first ever Nofx song i ever heard and it made them my #1 top best band ever, if you are a NoFx fan you have to get this album and if you're just a punk rock fan you stil have to get this album (Written by my son. ).

THE GREATEST SONG EVER WRITTEN.... PERIOD.
I mean, just the lyrics:
"And so we go, on with our lives,
We know the truth, but prefer lies,
Lies are simple, simple is bliss,
Why go against tradition when we can?
Admit defeat, live in decline"

I mean, if you read the lyrics to this song, it reminds you of a dark poem. Let me say, NOFX is TIED for my favorite band, and ALL of their songs/albums ROCK, but NONE compare to this! An 18 minute long Punk-A-Thon, I have found myself singing it aloud or in my head, but I don't mind, cause it's SO awesome! Now, if you've ever heard of NOFX, what usually comes to mind? I know, sex jokes and rude humor, but this song leaves all those behind, and it shows a darker, more mature side of NOFX. Oh, yeah, did I mention it's 18 MINUTES LONG? I mean, coming from a band who's infamous for short songs,(Well, coming from a punk band) this was COMPLETELY unexpected! Now, Green Day tried to do it with "Jesus of Suburbia" and "Homecoming", and, don't get me wrong those are good songs, but neither compare to this. Kudos to NOFX!!!!!! KEEP ROCKIN!!!.

The best NO/FX song
Perhaps this is the first time where buying an album that is only one song (and probably the only) is 100% worth it. Wow. Its odd to hear NO/FX singing on such serious subjects. I mean, come on, compare the lyrics on this to(. . . )(dont get me wrong, I think that song is great). The first time I heard some of their stuff,I thought "this is catchy, but, wow these guys are idiots. " But after hearing this I strongly take back. This shows me these guys have some of the best song writing abilites on the punk rock market. (or any market for that matter). I think when NO/FX really puts mind and emotion into their music they have the potentail song writing abilites of Bad Religion. They are very talented as well. But I think they dumb themselves down a little to much to reach to a broader audience.

Considering all of their abilites, I think this is a real shame.

Dont get me wrong, I love all of their humorous stuff. They have a real knack for humor. But I think politics is their strong point, personally. If you like the subject matter in this song I sugguest "The War on Errorisim. " If you want to hear fantasically energetic and funny NO/FX I sugguest "White Trash, Two heebs, and a bean. "
Anyway. . .
Great stuff here. Listen to it with an open mind.
A few years ago, who would have though you could have been educated by No/fx?
Highly Reccomended.
