"...And Justice For All" for death metal Whereas their debut was essentially a 40 minute blast of stripped-down, raw death metal, but still an extreme metal essential, "Cause of Death" takes things into a more progressive, technical, and shall I even say a classier state of being. "Cause of Death" sounds rather different than Obituary's debut album "Slowly We Rot".
"Cause of Death" showcases Obituary playing longer, more epic-sounding songs with a much more technical aspect to them. Progressive songwriting is also very abundant here. In fact, I would say that this is to death metal what Metallica's ". . . And Justice To All" is to thrash metal.
In addition, James Murphy, formerly of the band Death, is the lead guitarist on this album. His leads and solos add much more depth to this album than what was demonstrated on "Slowly We Rot". On this album, the guitar solos are less chaotic and random, and instead more classically influenced, melodic and technical. This makes the album even better.
Overall, "Cause of Death" is another classic death metal album, and an astounding relase from "Obituary". My only complaint here is the unnecessary cover of Celtic Frost's "Circle of the Tyrants". Honestly, I think that song is covered too much, but still Obituary's cover of it is a great one. And by the way, be sure to get this album in the 2-for-1 deal with "Slowly We Rot". It'll save money and it gives you more Obituary music faster! Well, that about wraps up this review, but still, I can't wait for when the band releases "Darkest Day" in just a few days! Thanks for the time, and peace.
DEATH=OBITUARY
Every song in here is insane the vocals are brutal stuff get this. Cause of the death is one of the best in DEATH metal the inhuman sounds from obituary are awesome this is a must own. If you like death metal you must sure hell get this along with bands like DEATH cause early death metal was the real violent stuff.
Don't even consider hesitation here
Words cannot do it justice, the best Obituary by far. One of the best metal albums you will ever be fortunate enough to hear. Buy two copies in case the first one gets hurt in any way. 100 stars and legendary.
A classic
All of the songs are very good and memorable. This album is a classic. The continuation between the songs is slightly different than most albums. There is some funky noise between songs like moaning, wind, growling, or similar noises. On this album, Obituary also covered Celtic Frost's Circle of the Tyrants.
No Filler On This Killer
Slowly We Rot was and is one of the most talked about death metal debuts ever, and with good reason, but after that tour Obituary lost two of its members, which was a huge blow to the band. After Slowly We Rot Obituary was THE death metal band. Allen West leaveing was especially hard on the band because his guitar work was one of the reasons they stuck out amongst the other bands in the rising death metal genre. Luckily Scott Burns the producer knew of a recently out of work guitarist by the name of James Murphy. James Murphy at that time recently ousted from Death came in to replace Allen West as lead guitarist. Though the guitarists differ in their style, Murphy doesn't hurt the band at all, in fact this is one of Obituary's best albums. From Infected to Chopped In Half to Turned Inside Out(not to mention the redone Find The Arise and the Celtic Frost cover of Circle Of The Tyrants)this album never gets flacid. This is one album you will listen to over and over and never get bored. This album has become known as the James Murphy album, and trust me, thats not a bad thing. All in all worth your time and money, if you can find the remastered version by itself(which I believe this is) get it, stay away from those combo 2 in 1 versions.
If you like this album look up the classic Slowly We Rot debut.
