Breathtaking
After having recently read the novel [[ASIN:0345322401 Songs of Distant Earth]], which inspired this album, the songs helped visualize the mezmorizing world that is Thalassa. I found Mike Oldfields "The Songs of a Distant Earth" to be completly breath taking. I recommend this album as a companion to the science fiction classic, or on its own as some wonderful new age music.

Mental massage
However, since then it has become a clear favourite. I must admit that, when I first heard this album, I was put off by the fact that it sounded so unlike any of Mike Oldfield's other works. The pieces are beautifully put together, and take the listener on a journey across time and space, which is fitting when one bears in mind the purpose for which the album was written. If ever I need to relax, in need of a mental massage, then this is the remedy that works every time!.

One of Humanity's finest musicians
With that being said, I found this piece of music exceptional. Since I've been an ardent fan of this man's music since I first heard Tubular Bells in the mid eighties, I will never be able to provide an unbiased viewpoint- I am that much of a fan. There have been some works by Oldfield that do not strike the chords others do, and there has yet to be something akin to the imaginative work of, say, Incantations or Hergest Ridge. Since our prayers to see those works matched in brilliance with anything since them have been unanswered all these years, we have to admit that all the work of Mike Oldfield is fitting of the man at the controls. I've seen harsh criticism of some of the works, but I have yet to hear the man produce music that doesn't place him among the greatest of all musicians in human history. 'Distant Earth' is really one of the better peices by Mr. Oldfield over the past twenty years or so, although I have yet to hear one I do not love. However, I had to let TBIII grow on me for a while. In short, if one appreciates the finest of today's ambitious music, then you will find this piece a treasure among your collection. .
