Well worth the extra cash... The gist behind their "Deliverance/Damnation" project was a challenge conceived by Opeth to spend some time in the studio and not just record one album, but two, each with its own theme and corresponding music. Really what Opeth has done is dissected their own style of music, the "rapture in tribulation" that is so apparent in the music as well as the lyrics, and established the two themes on two seperate CD's, rather than mixing them together like they have previously done. "Deliverance" being the anguish and distress accompanied by death metal music/vocals, and "Damnation" being the beauty beneath it accompanied by their trademark 70's progressive sound with acoustic guitars and Mikael's soothing voice. Mikael didn't have to work too hard on the emotion of his lyrics, considering just previous to flying out to Gothenburg to record Deliverance and Damnation, he had attended his grandmother's funeral after she had been hit by a car. Opeth not only overcame this challenge, but they utterly destroyed it, creating not only the surprisingly heavy "Deliverance," but also making their most-anticipated "Damnation," which, i can assure you, will be their best-selling CD. It's time for Opeth to become a household name. The reference i make to "Damnation" with this extra CD is that both songs give a taste of what "Damnation" will sound like. Both "Patterns in the Ivy II" and "Still Day Beneath the Sun" are fully acoustic with nothing hard or heavy. Don't let the title "Patterns in the Ivy II" bother you, i'll admit i was hesitant to it at first, considering the "astounding success" of "Unforgiven II," but this song is absolutely wonderful and complements the original perfectly. "Still Day Beneath the Sun" fully showcases mikael's stunning vocals. The video track, titled "Harvest" is basically just a recording session video of the guys recording "Blackwater Park" and hanging out, with the studio track "Harvest" playing in the background, and occasional sequences of Mikael auditioning the song.
