Opeth - Blackwater Park Audio CD
A fair review of the Opeth "Blackwater Park" Audio CD. Please note that the below review is the views of the authors, and authors only. You can get a complete list of all

Opeth is Not Metal. They Sound Like Seal. How anyone calls this "metal" I will never know. This album sounds like a mixture of Seal and Eric Clapton. I'd actually rather buy a Seal record than listen to the sounds of fingers slide on an acoustic guitar like Dave Matthews Band. Opeth is a band your mom would listen to while she's cooking in the kitchen.
An anthem of Metal
This album is quite good, not one of my favorites, but has 2 songs that are an anthem for metal music, one is the record selftitle Blackwater Park, and the other is Patterns in the ivy part II.
Excellent and deep
I would prefer to have more "clean" vocals as I am not a big fan of the growls, but in most songs, they seem to work. Being relatively new to the band, I did not expect the amazing depth of the music.
"The Drapery Falls" is one of the most emotionally stirring pieces of music I have heard in years. Again, the growls somewhat diminish the effect for me.
Over all, I am very happy that I experimented with this CD.
The ultimate Opeth album
"Harvest" and "The Drapery Falls" are amazingly gracious (if you like them, consider getting Alcest's "Souvenirs d'Un Autre Monde"). Although it is difficult to rank Opeth's albums (because they're all incredible), I would argue that this album is one of the greatest albums they ever made. Then comes "Black Water Park", a very powerful and epic song.
This special edition comes with an extra CD, which includes two new songs ("Still day beneath the sun" and "Patterns in the ivy II") and a video of "Harvest"). If you're an Opeth fan, it's worth the extra cost.

Amazing!
The vocals, to me, were an enormous distraction, that made the music underneath difficult to enjoy. In my initial approach to metal with non-clean vocals, I was very turned off.
And then I found Opeth. This album is a stunning mix of clean and death vocals, over a similarly stunning mix of brutal metal and soothing, almost lullaby-esque melodies. This leads to a very compelling album. I've always described this band's work as "If Pink Floyd played metal. . . ," because their compositions are incredibly complex, well thought out, and performed to perfection. Always changing, and never boring, Opeth have really set an incredibly high bar with Blackwater Park. . . one that even they will have difficulty reaching.
Where possible, I do recommend picking up the Special Edition.
