Good album. Recalls their Play Deep debut in some places The first half of the album and the hit single "For You" starts kind of slow for a bit. After albums two and three didn't attract a lot of people, The Outfield's fourth album is a return to what made them stars in the first place. But the album picks up in the second half, as I hear shades of Play Deep felt in the songs. Raytown Boys is one of the best rockers here; it kind of recalls the chords of Your Love a little bit. But no song on here stands out than that final one on the album, After The Storm. It's such a dramatic and dymanic performance with its dark and sonic landscapes and lots of lead guitar on this power ballad. One of the band's best written and arranged songs. Although this was their first for MCA after three albums with Columbia, the band really continued to make strong rock music with some pop leanings with this one.
Their forth best release
I don't like every track, but Burning Blue and After the Storm are excellent tunes. Not as energetic as their other material, but a fun sing-along cd. If you can buy this one for five or six dollars- do it. For You is a great song!.
Easily The Outfield's worst
You probably heard "For You" - the cd's hit song and by far the best on it. This cd has only 4 good songs on it and the others are definitely throw aways. Other good songs include "Unrespectable" and "One Night in Heaven". "Take it all" the second single was only so so (don't confuse with "Winning it all" off Rock-Eye).
The cd is more moody than the other Outfield cd's. It's kind of a depressing cd for them. Look at the Cd cover that tells it all.
The Outfield I like is much more upbeat. This cd is the Outfield trying to sound like the psychedelic Beatles (song titled "John lennon for example). It didn't cut it in my mind.
Keep in mind most people writing these reviews are Outfield fans. I like them too but am not a fanatic, but if you expect anything like "Play Deep" pass in this one. Try either "Bangin" or "Voice of Babylon" (recommended). I can't recommend this cd unless you are looking to complete your Outfield collection.
Very best of the best
I've heard it several times, recorded it in various ways, but still just need to have the original. I'm a great follower of this group and this album has been my only "missing issue" in the collection. Great mix of songs and one of the best sound recording in al of T. O. albums. . . waiting for the re-edition of this one (why haven't they!!??).
Two Steps Back...
The day I got my first CD player I bought The Beatles "White Album" and this one. One of the first CD's I ever bought. And now that it's out of stock does that mean its a collectors item? All kidding aside, this one was a bit of a disappointment. What I loved on their first 2 albums was the great drumming of Alan Jackman. He's gone here a replaced with, well, a machine I guess since no drummer is listed. "For You" is the best track on here and honestly, there are some here that I just don't like. But, then again, not everything The Beatles put out I liked either, so. . .
Just thinking here, I know someone who only has this album on cassette and is desperate to get ahold of a CD of it. Maybe I'll send it to her ;).
