Historic collection
All of the TP popular songs, and a slew of deep cuts, alternatives, etc. This collection is one of the best collections of it's kind. Well worth the cost.

"playback"
this was a gift i bought for my son, and he has reported no problems of any kind with the cd.

OK, but a bit of a rip-off.
That rates five stars, as it is all classic Petty, with a lot of obscurities included which rate as good as or better than the released stuff. This review's rating is for the business end of things, not for the music. So why only three stars? Because when it was originally released, I remember the box selling for close to $70. 00 (I mean, six discs, it's worth it, right?). Then you realize that the six discs contain a total of five hours and 15 minutes of music, all of which COULD have been issued on a total of FOUR CDs. When word got out that the box was an MCA rip-off, sales plummetted, at which time the box was marked down CONSIDERABLY (I got mine about a year later for about $38. 00 at the local Tower Records [remember them?]). If this can be gotten for about that price, I'd say grab it, because it is a highly entertaining listen. But I wouldn't plunk down any more than that to Universal Music (now owner of the MCA imprint), a company which has proven their abject greed time and time again. .

Priceless Petty
This box set achieves what fans of his music want, i. I was born and raised in Tom Petty's hometown (Gainesville, FL) and have followed his career since Mudcrutch. e. , unreleased versions of many of his hits, and rarities previously only available as bootlegs. I recently read Paul Zollo's book, "Conversations with Tom Petty", and the box set is the perfect companion (along with the "Playback" music video DVD) for linking the history to the music of one of America's true Rock and Roll Greats!.

Ok .... But Not Great
If i had to do it again I would stick to the albums. . Lots of this stuff has been so overplayed ( not Tom's fault) that it goes in one ear and out the next. . . The oddities are ok but not mind blowing. . . That Tom has come up with so many great songs is testament to his remarkable ablilties as an artist. . . To have so many back to back is just a bit numbing. . . Best to buy the albums you like and enjoy the songs as they were intended. . . as part of a whole. . . . .
