Classic
I grew up listening to most of these tracks, without ever owning the album!

I've always been a fan of Tom Petty, but I've only owned a couple of his solo albums. If you've listened to any classic rock radio station in the last 20 years, you've heard a lot of the songs on this album. I finally caved and bought this title and I'm a little bummed I didn't do so a long, long time ago.

This is what I would consider to be an almost perfect album: great tunes, great lyrics, and all produced with light touch that lets the life in the music come through clean and raw.

If you're a casual fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers or Mudcrutch and you don't own this album, I would highly recommend it! .

Classic 70's American Rock Album
Easily Tom Petty's best set of songs - all killer and no filler. This effort by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers may well be the best American rock album of the '70's, bar none. Jimmy Iovine's first production for the band brings out the finest elements of each individual musician. Mike Campbell's lead guitar is perfect, all slide and Sun Records style power. Benmont Tench's keyboards swirl and weave with great effect and the rhythm section is as tight as a bowstring. This particular album is timeless rock and roll and should be in every rock fans collection.

simple review
(too much time to waste?)

Anyway, this album is excellent and easily Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' finest work. Ok I'm not going to audition for a job with Rolling Stone the way some of these people seem to be doing here. I can listen to these tracks over and over. If you like Tom Petty at all, you will absolutely love this album.

...Full Speed Ahead
The label that had issued his debut and You're Gonna Get It!, Shelter, had been sold off. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were at an impasse when it came time to record their third album. Petty wasn't too crazy about the deal MCA was giving him, so he disputed the contract. The fight pushed Petty to declare bankruptcy, but he also persuaded MCA to sweeten the band's contract.

Petty and the Heartbreakers, reinvigorated, quickly hit the studio with some new songs and a few pulled out of their early Mudcrutch days, and then delivered the best of their still young career. "Damn The Torpedoes" blisters with terrific songs and Jimmy Iovine's pristine yet rocking production. The Heartbreakers had matured into a stunning rock band, having refined their Byrds/Stones hybrid into a recognizable sound of their own. Petty's songwriting was on a streak; not only are there three classics here with "Refugee," "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Here Comes My Girl," all the other songs are uniformly terrific and Petty delivers his best balled yet with "Louisiana Rain. "

Everything here, from the assertive stance of Petty grabbing hold of his career to Iovine's production to the Heartbreaker's playing, worked perfectly. The band's tight yet aggressive playing found them riding a fine line between classic rock and the exploding new wave, as if Elvis Costello had discovered The Byrds and written Armed Forces. As a result, "Damn The Torpedoes" is one of Petty's classics, and album that defined its year and still sounds as fresh as ever.

What's not to like about Tom Petty
I bout this becuase I saw Petty do cuts from this album live in 1975. Rocks bad boy shows the world what southern American rock is all about.
