It grows on you
The songs are compact stories that show Mr. While this is not a jammin', turn it up loud, type of album, it grows on you with time. Petty's evolution as a song writer. There are no extended guitar solos or jams; it is not that kind of album. There are one or two singles here, but since rock radio barely exists in Greensboro, NC, I won't be hearing any of these songs on the radio. In sum, Tom Petty fans should not be disappointed. .

Great bonus tracks
I give this version five stars, because the bonus tracks are nice to have, and add strongly to the album overall. I already reviewed the regular edition of this album, and gave it four stars. Especially the all-new song "Home", which for me would have been one of the best songs on the "regular" album; it's very surprising that this song wasn't included originally. Also surprising that "Around the Roses" wasn't on the original album. These "extra" songs actually make the album more complete, as they do fit in with the theme of the album.

Now as to the list price of the album, and the fact that the first version was issued without these tracks (basically forcing die-hard fans to buy TWO CDs), that's not good. But I'm not going to take off "stars" for that, my five star rating here is strictly for the content of the CD, with no adjustment for price, etc. I hope that this "special edition" eventually becomes the regular edition, at a regular price, and that the original edition is dropped entirely. Bottom line, we don't really need the special packaging (although it's nice), but we do "need" this CD with this content, so this is the version to get. .

Tom, are you selling out?
I bought the original release and now I find I have to buy a special issue re-release for 4 more songs? Let's hope this is a record company gimmick and not anything TP had something to do with in an attempt to rip off all his loyal fans who have bought everything he's put out over the years. Like so many others I'm a bit annoyed about this. Word of warning for everyone: There is a TP movie on the way - believe its early next year - might want to hold off on buying it when it initially comes out on dvd - then just get the dvd with the bonus material later. Say it ain't so Tom - you haven't sold out!! Listen to your own words in "The Last DJ. ".

Tom ?
such a Heartbreaker : ( Mark. Tom,, I already bought this exceptional album of yours so please just charge us for the four new awesome tracks or perhaps we can exchange and pay a little more.

A great album
So why buy this version? Firstly; if you don't have it already, get it, you will not regret it. Tom Petty's Highway Companion, without question, is an excellent album that is needed by any Petty fan and music fan alike. Secondly; if you're like me and you already own the album, buy it for the bonus tracks and for the sure reason that it's a great album worthy enough to buy again. The bonus tracks are no let down and definitely leave the audience feeling satisfied. The packaging is cute but it does leave an incentive to buy this edition. However, I stress again, the bonus tracks make it worth buying the album again!
Home is a smart song that is has a nice production, a little out of continuity of the rest of the album. Around the roses is a little less in quality but more in tune with the rest of the album. The demos are simply great; I found it to be rediscovering two songs that I absolutely love.
If money is tight or you just don't care enough to buy an AMAZING album again, then just buy a used copy from amazon. As of 8/26/2007 the album is not available on the US iTunes store so you can't download them yet. What can I say that I haven't already said many times over: get the album, listen to it, and enjoy it; you will not regret it, again.
