awesome the mike's song is a barn burner. this is one of my favorite phish shows of all time. the first disc/set is wonderful. this is a must have for any phish fan. be sure to check out slave to the traffic light and divided sky on that first disc.
good show, interesting jams
I have heard alot of talk of the divided sky from this show. This was my first purchase in the live phish series, I must say I was pleased. . Its really just an average live version nothing earth shattering in the jam section. This show has a nice set list, it is well played throughout. . but not really any major jams that stand out. I really like the tube and the llama rocks really hard. The ACDC bag gets out of hand at the very end. . the jam starts a bit unfocused, but if you can stick it out, the payoff is about as high energy as you will ever hear phish get! The Mikes Groove is interesting, it goes into a kind of tribal jungle beat through the Mikes song, which goes into lifeboy and an average weekapaug groove. Disc 3 has a rare accoustic set which is nice and everything else is played well but doesnt really standout. A nice setlist is always great, but the best jams are the ones you never see coming!.
The best of Phish
I will keep this short, but this cd changed my life. I had only heard two studio Phish hits, Sample in a Jar, and Heavy Things, before I was given this for Christmas a in 2001. It is delicious. Weed helped in the transitional phase of listening to a cd & liking it. But now, it is just one of the best pieces of music Phish has ever dropped, and if you enjoy Phish, you will love this. If you don't, I understand, I know the hippies annoy you. But honestly, I listen to jam, rap, rock, and jazz, and this album is tops.
blown away
I have 10 of the 20 live phish concerts out now. and this has got to be one of my favorites. The opening divided sky is amazing. . the band was perfect on this one, all 17 minutes of it. Tube was sounding good and the maze was a fast paced one that i enjoyed. PYITE was excellent as usual and llama was really rockin'. Slave was, in my mind, one of the high point of this show, the jam at the end is genius and it sounds perfect.
ACDC is a great opener to the second set and the always climatic ending to lizards was awesome. The ultimate best point of this show is the Mike's into Lifeboy into Weekapaug. Mikes song has an awesome jam and is over 20 minutes, then lifeboy is beautiful, how i imagined it live. and weekapaug lives up to its typical greatness.
The 3rd cd lives up to the rest of the concert with the David Bowie, Ya Mar and SOAM. The three acoustic songs to start the cd were sounding good as well. Strange Design was real good, one that i havent heard much. sweet adeline is a good acapella one. the encore of sleeping monkey and rocky top was great fun as well.
I encourage anyone to buy this cd, maybe a little knowledge of phish, but anyone could find something they enjoy in this show. its worth every penny.
the ol' 96er
The boys had to know that this was going to be one of those nights. Trey starts the show by saying, "i've said it before and i'll say it again," and from there Divided Sky takes flight. Trey plays the first few seconds, then page joins in, and you can just feel it. This is the perfect Sky, alone it is worth the price. It bends and curves with every lick of Trey's guitar, every strum of Mike's bass, all the beats of Fish's drum, and of course Page's fingers dancing on the ivory. The Tube that follows is amazing and Page plays the monkey out of those keys. The PYITE gets you groovin after the old place, and the Llama is ferocius.
The second disc picks up exactly where they left off. AC/DC is super tight, and the lizards that follows is full of fun and performed perfectly. Mikes>Lifeboy>Groove is just another reason why this band is followed by so many year after year.
The third disc is also great. It seems not many reviewers perferred it, and i can understand why not, but who can turn their backs on strange design (what up doobs). There's also a sweet adeline that your grandmothr would love! The filler of Ya mar is funky and the Slave closes it out nicely.
But again, the Sky is phenomenal. Get the CD, crank it up and closes your eyes and boogie on.
