Pleasant
Sometimes, a little dull, and never really intricate or surprising, like some other Phish music has been. This album is packed with pleasant music. I like it OK, though. As a longtime fan, I'm a little disappointed, wish the writing could have been a little more ambitious, more interesting. My favorite two albums are Rift and Nectar, for reference. This one is more like Farmhouse, which I actually learned to love, so maybe it'll be the same with Joy.

Only major complaint: the lyrics. I'm not usually a lyrics person, unless they're really good. If they're bad, I usually don't notice or care. But on this album, oof. Just corny, right out of the pages of a jr high schooler's journal. Don't know if Marshall wrote them, but I prefer the old mishmash of hippy-trippy imagery to this.

Pros: The production, best of any Phish album yet. Just a really good mix. Also, the singing. When it comes to vocals, Phish's reach has always extended their grasp, writing intricate harmonies their voices could never quite pull off. And Trey, not really a singer. Thats OK by me, I don't listen to Phish for the awesome singing. However, on Joy, Trey's singing seems to be in tune a lot more of the time, like he's improving, and the harmonies get nailed a surprisingly high percentage of the time.

I can't compare this record to Rift or Nectar, it's not in the same league. But I guess it's nice enough to have on in the background while I'm working.

Not horrible
This disk is the best since Farmhouse but mediocre at best. Just a quick review from a long time Phish fan. You'll like a few songs but probably wont listen to it start to finish for the rest of you life.

Welcome back!
With high expectations often comes disappointment. I'm suprised by the wide disparity in the reviews - seems Joy is shaping up to be a loved it/hated it kind of album. I didn't have high expectations for this record, so I'm not let down like many here are. It's a safe record, good for a comeback album.

Best tracks: Time Turns Elastic, Twenty Years Later, Sugar Shack (yes, the lyrics don't make a lot of sense, but it is really catchy after a few listens), Stealing Time from the Faulty Plan.

The more I listen to this record, the more it grows on me. It is a warm-up for the new future of Phish. I will have high expectations for future albums, and I don't expect they will disappoint.

Great return!
This album is really good and flows pretty nicely actually. I'm quite surprised by the # of 1 star reviews. For a bunch of older guys getting back together after a 5 year break, I think this is a perfect return for them. Clearly they didn't try to write their best album ever. I think they all said "what have you written lately?", and then took each others songs and recorded them. I think their next album will be the whole band writing together again. But don't listen to the people that say that this album is bad. That is BS. .

Great.
"Time Turns to Elastic" is a great song, reminiscent of old Phish. Great way to start off the reunion. .
