This is just for the Pogues fan but not worth the money for anybody else

Hearing "NW3", the different versions of "Fairytale of New York", the live stuff and the Pogues version of Shane's solo songs like "Aisling", "Victoria" and "Dunigal Express" was worth the money. I was excited to hear this even though a two thirds of it is bad I'm a huge Pogues fan and if I wasn't such a fanatic about their stuff this would of been a total waste of money. On the other hand most of the songs are duds, I mean come on who wants to hear Shane sing "Do you believe in magic" and "Eve of Destruction" all of the time!? I did want to hear them once or twice to see their creative motivation at the time but that is good enough for me. What's really sad was to hear Shane go downhill in the songs especially in "Aisling" he mumbled half of the time because he couldn't keep up with the song, his solo version from "The Snake" album is way better. And as a good little Pogues fan I have the songs from Sid and Nancy and from Straight to Hell so that's another disk I won't listen to.
I just picked out about an CD's worth of studio stuff and a CD worth of live stuff to listen to all of the time and the rest I'll enjoy maybe once a year.

For hardcore fans and completists only
After a first listening of this set I am mildly disappointed. I've been a fan of The Pogues since "Rum, Sodomy and the Lash", which I still own on vinyl. While the rarities and alternate versions are fine there is a fair amount of filler.

I may change my mind with a second or third listening, but I would recommend this set only for hardcore fans.

If you're new to The Pogues start with their first 5 CDs, preferably the new editions with bonus tracks, then move onto "The Snake" by Shane MacGowan. If you need more come back to this set.

For the ultimate fan
Not for the part-time Pogues fan. This has everything the ultimate Pogues fan could want (and even some stuff he or she does not).

There are some great demo versions of Pogues classics, with Shane sounding almost prepubescent; it's really great to hear how the songs evolved. There are also some great live and previously unreleased material.

The full color booklet is very cool, too. .

Irish Eyes are Slamming through Hell's Ditch
This 5 CD collection blasts a new cap into the Boys from County Hell. Say Pogue Mahone then get ready to fight. From the clunky but drunk spanking of the kerry polka to the lord santy's fairest daughter any pogue fan will attest to sean's genius climbing the banks of sweet melody to the chasm of vengeful death blows. Hot Dogs with Everyting, greenland whale fisheries, billy's bones, night train to lorca refocus pogue fans to this battle triumph. No collection is complete until this box is soaked in your bushmills.

Incredible Stuff
This is way more than I was expecting. Wow. Like many Pogues fans I own all the regular releases as well as some odd ball stuff but the majority of the material on the box set is completely fresh. And outstanding. Having all the "Straight to Hell" and "Sid and Nancy" tracks is fantastic. This will not dissapoint a Pogues fan nor any rock fan for that matter. Buy it and be blown away by one of the truly great bands to ever exist.

Jeremy 7.
