They Can't All Be Zingers? Oh Yes They Can The Primus sound is very unique and heavy on bass and brilliant with the spoken word. There is no other band like Primus and that is a good thing. A Primus song is like a short story with a hard hitting sound.
Like most people who purchased the cd, I have the entire Primus collection. This CD was purchased for a road trip as it was easier to bring one cd along than an entire collection. All of the songs are fun and easy to sing along to. With that being said I would recommend They Can't All Be Zingers to anyone who is starting out with Primus. The true fan will be left wanting more as there are several great songs that were left out.
I give this cd a 9 out of 10 as a Primus Collection
and a 10 out of 10 for the likelyhood of repeat playing.
Wow!
This album contains most of my favorites by Primus, But 16 songs is not enough for Primus. I am a big fan of primus, I have most of their albums but i do not have this one. This is a great cd, but I might suggest checking the other ones out, too.
Primus were always just a bit too out there
Primus were always just a bit too out there. With the exception of "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" and "My Name is Mud, it's true; they can't all be zingers (or in this case-good). Their long and intricate bass solos, spoken word vocals, and hap-hazard lyrics come from a place and time in music history that I wouldn't mind forgetting. I have always respected Claypool as a bass player, but he's a lot more creative and tolerable with his solo work.
Ace Collection of "Zingers"
And thankfully, "They Can't All Be Zingers" is saved from being a tired collection for a few notable reasons. As many reviewers have stated, Primus are well worthy of this best of collection. . . "100% Genuine Fully Remastered Pre-Packaged Cheese Product" reads the album's amusing front slogan. In typical style, Primus blend the dangerous lines of comedy and music, importantly ensuing a sense of self-parody. More amusing adverts such as "Kids Love It!" surround the cover. Maybe it's a little bizarre and some may say childish, but then Primus were always something of an oddball. . . musically, visually and thematically.
The album's track list is more or less as expected. All of Primus' most popular songs are on here, displaying all the excellence of Les Claypool and gang, "To Defy The Laws of Tradition", "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver", "Tommy The Cat", "My Name Is Mud", "Shake Hands With Beef" etc are all here, all showcasing the band's unique breed of jazzy funky metal. I was pleased with some other less obvious inclusions, such as "Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers" and "Coattails of a Dead Man", songs that give the more casual listener something new. As with all best of collections, "They Can't All Be Zingers" leaves out some very fine songs that could have easily crept on. I second the claims that "Lacquer Head" is missing, as is the haunting "Bob", and I would have liked the menacing title track from "Frizzle Fry" given a run. However, such is the nature of this type of album, and I can just listen to their albums. Casual fans and new fans should find much joy here - a good trip through a successful and diverse career.
