The Black Album
The album received generally good reviews and Q and Allmusic gave the album 4 stars. The Black Album by Prince is an album that was supposed to first have been released after Sign o'the times but was not released until 1994 and it is Prince showcasing his funky part of his personality. 4/5.

Lovesexy or The Black Album? The Black Album, hands down
release. LOVESEXY, Prince's actual 1987 Warner Bros. THE BLACK ALBUM Prince's 1987 bootleg release. If you want the rock of PURPLE RAIN with a trip, LOVESEXY's your bet. If you like it somewhat funky, THE BLACK ALBUM is your bet.

Both albums feature "When 2 R In Love" but THE BLACK ALBUM has got PRINCE more stranger than ever. Not only funky but dance tracks. "Le Grind" and "Cindy C. " kick off this party. "Rock Hard In A Funky Place" ends the party on a good note. It's a short party but well worth it. I don't want to give away the other 4 tracks.

The vinyl of THE BLACK ALBUM came out in 1987 while the Warner Bros. official release came in 1994 on CD (now out of print) while Prince was trying any way he could to exhaust ties with Warners, or else this once hidden gem would still be hiding.

A Mysterious Classic
And that it became a hot seller in the bootleg marketplace only enhanced the "underground" hype. The legend of the album verges on the bizarre, with the pop culture rumor machine revving up on why Prince pulled this follow-up to Sign o' the Times before the scheduled December 1987 release and replaced it with Lovesexy.

The eight tracks - clocking in at 44:43 - were created for a Sheila E. birthday bash and are unbridled funk/hip-hop. The only track to be officially released during this time period was the ballad When 2R in Love, which appeared on Lovesexy.

The album was finally released by Warner Bros. in November 1994, but in a limited pressing, so it remains a tough find even in its official form. But it is worth locating this classic that has a mysterious past that could be the focal point of a whodunnit mystery novel. .

GREAT MUSIC by PRINCE!!!!!
Please get this Cd if you don't already own it!I certainly appreciate GREAT music and this is it!!!!! . I have heard about this Black Album by Prince for a while now & finally got it! I think it is a little different, but at the same time; it's Prince and anyone will love the #4 track on this CD.

I really enjoy this album
Well, get off the hype machine and actually listen to this album. I suppose people think of this as a bad release because it wasn't originally intended to be so. I really don't get it, all the tracks on this album are strong, some rather strange, but you can't be a Prince fan without getting into his eccentricities, that's what makes him such an influential artist, not just being catchy and living off of Purple Rain (Prince has never tried to make another Purple Rain, except maybe for 'Around The World In A Day').

My favorite tracks would be 'Le Grind', 'Bob George', and 'Superfunky. . . '; but honestly I don't hear a single weak piece in the entire mix, and while 'When 2 R In Love', an awesome ballad, does bring down the tempo, it still works sandwiched between the two minimalist hip hop pieces.

There isn't really any underlining theme to this album, but overall it's a good listen.
