Not your older brother's Queen. In the process they lost most of their U. By the late 80's, Queen had evolved (some would say de-volved) into a slick Euro-pop band, recording in musical styles ranging from soul to calypso to guitar ballads to heavy rock. S. fanbase, and this album did nothing to bring those fans back into the fold. Unfortunate, because this LP is among the best of their 80's output, and one of their most diverse. The heavy rockers are still there; tracks like "I Want It All" and "Khashoggi's Ship" prove that Queen still could Rock You. But the real fun here is in the tracks that go off the beaten musical path. "Rain Must Fall" is a festive calypso number that features Freddie summoning up the ghost of Carmen Miranda, and "Breakthru" is simply an excellent 80's synth pop song. "The Invisible Man" and "The Miracle" are 2 other standout cuts that add to this very diverse musical mixture. Queen's late-period music was light years beyond "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "We Will Rock You"; not better, not worse, just completely and utterly different. Perhaps those fans that were turned off to Queen in the 80's will give this album another listen, if for no other reason than to experience a band that wasn't afraid to break away from formula and routine. One wonders what other musical horizons Queen might have explored had Freddie lived. Fortunately, they covered a lot of musical ground during their 20-year career, and they left us one of the largest and most diverse catalogs of the rock era. A miracle indeed.

Queen was still great in the 80's
This is a true work of art- every song is golden. 1989 -nineteen eighty-nine was a great year with regards to Queen. The music lives up to the title. And, Pebozo questions my authority - ha! Go ahead and listen to your lackluster Paul Rodgers and Queen CD. I'll stick with a classic.
Very Very Happy
Check them on You Tube and Queen is so much better than I had ever imagined. I first saw Queen on VH1. .
"Yes, it was a worthwhile experience! It was all worth it!"
Freddie Mercury's health was deteriorating at the time but still wished Queen to go on, albiet without touring. Throughout most of this album (with the exception of 2 songs "Rain Must Fall" and "My Baby Does Me"), all members of Queen shine brightly. If you notice in the videos, he's grown a beard to hide his gaunt appearance. Also, the lyrics are a lot more personal than before. All of the members got credit for each song ("We made a decision," commented Brian May, "that perhaps we should've made on previous albums"). You can skip the remixes, nothing amazing about them. However, 2 bonus songs are quite interesting. "Hang On In There" is a positive song exhorting the listener to not give up and promises "Your wish will be granted. " "Chinese Torture" is a moody instrumental with a synthesized orchestra and Brian's expressive guitar. "Party" and "Khashoggi's Ship" are both reminiscent of "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions. " Though 2 separate songs, it's hard to imagine one without the other. "Party" seems to say the party is over while "Khashoggi" seems to say the party is not over (this is probably in reference to the rumours that Queen was breaking up at the time). "The Miracle" is a 5 minute epic (the video for this song was entertaining, with 4 youngsters filling in for the band). It features positive lyrics ("The one thing we're all looking for is peace on earth, and an end to war. It's a miracle we need!") and a fun little jam at the end before they sing "The time will come one day, you'll see, when we can all be friends. " Following that is the hard rocking "I Want It All. " This is reminscent of the early 1970's Queen. "The Invisible Man" is one of those songs you'll either find catchy or grating. Each member of the band is introduced. "Breakthrough" begins with a semi-operatic intro, moving onto a fast paced melody like a speedtrain. "Rain Must Fall" is a schmaltzy reggae song. "Scandal" is one of Freddie's more personal songs, probably based on the rumours that were spread about him, thinly veiled around a breakup- "Tommorow [it's] hard times, and no one really knows the truth from the lies. " "My Baby Does Me" is a shmaltzy R&B song about a dying relationship. "Was It All Worth It" is one of the best songs on here. Freddie recalls the good times and bad times of Queen and asks himself "Was it all worth it? Living breathing rock and roll in this God-forsaken life? Giving all my heart and soul in this never-ending fight. . . " You can pretty much guess what the answer is.
A mediocre late '80s offering
" Unfortunately, those same tendencies run through this 1989 release. Many who heard the power chords and anthematic chorus of "I Want It All" were lead to believe that Queen had returned to their rock roots, discarding the heavy synths that had marred albums like "A Kind of Magic. There are some great songs here, including the already mentioned "I Want It All," the breezy title track, and the scathing "Scandal. " But there are just as many throwaways, including Roger Taylor's "The Invisible Man," "My Baby Does Me" and the downright embarrassing "Party. " The album closer, "Was It All Worth It," may be the strongest of the lot, with Freddie Mercury looking back on a life of rock and roll excess and pronouncing "Yes, it was a worthwhile experience. " A very uneven release, but worth it if you're a Queen fan.
