When Hollywood Records signed Queen in 1990 and re-released its back catalog (for the US and Canada they were on Elektra/Asylum from 1973-82 and Capitol/EMI from 1984-89) in the US and Canada) in 1991, the band were slowly regaining America. Queen's Classic Queen was released in March of 1992. The band were huge for most of the world outside the US and Canada whom pretty much ignored the band for nearly a decade. Then the February of 1991 release of Innuendo gave Queen its first Gold selling album in the US since 1984's The Works and "Headlong" and the Innuendo title cut were huge US Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks hits reaching numbers 3 and 15 on that chart respectively. Just as Queen were slowly re-conquering the US and Canada, lead singer Freddie Mercury died from AIDS in November of 1991 and Innuendo sales boosted as did its back catalog (just released on CD at the time for the first time in the US and Canada).
Then in February of 1992 came a little film called Wayne's World which used "Bohemian Rhapsody" for a centerpiece scene took that track (the flip side to "The Show Must Go On" at the time) and gave it a second chart life, peaking even higher than it did the first time around this time reaching #2. Hollywood Records quickly released a revamped version of Greatest Hits II entitled Classic Queen that March to capitalize on the moment, and found Queen with its first US Top Ten album since The Game in 1980 and reached #4.
On this collection, you get songs that were on the original 1981 Greatest Hits collection out of "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Keep Yourself Alive" and "Under Pressure" (a 1991 remix done by Brian Malouf for this collection). Plus you get the US rock radio smashes which were "Tie Your Mother Down" (which is a great rock track), the minor rock radio hit "One Vision", "I Want it All" which hit #3 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Track charts in 1989, "Headlong" which reached #3 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in 1991. Plus you get a unique edit of "The Miracle" and big European hits like the rocker "Hammer to Fall", "I'm Going Slightly Mad", "Who Wants to Live Forever", "A Kind of Magic" and songs that weren't hits like the rocking "Stone Cold Crazy", the ballad "One Year of Love" and songs from 1991's Innuendo that became hits after Freddie Mercury's death "These Are the Days of Our Lives" which became a minor Adult Contemporary hit in 1992 and "The Show Must Go On" which peaked at #2 with "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the US in 1992 (and a huge Billboard Mainstream Rock Track hit as well).
Classic Queen would hit #4 and sell three million copies plus in the US alone but as a standalone (like the maroon Greatest Hits is kind of bland) but bought together is a great overview to Queen. If you want other great best ofs buy either the Gold or Platinum Collections.
How can you not love Queen?
A must have for Queen fans, or people who just want some fun music. Wonderful. This CD is a little more emotional than the "Best of Queen" CD.
sends shivers down my spine...
Freddy Mercury sang with all his heart and soul; and the band backed him up musically without a flaw. Classic Queen boasts many excellent tunes by one of the greatest rock bands ever, Queen. Mercury's piano playing added to the overall positive effect of this band that could never be forgotten. Sure, this is a single CD compilation; but as single CDs go this one is really pretty good. We get seventeen songs with one of them being the somewhat curious but unparalleled "Bohemian Rhapsody. " In addition, the artwork is great and the quality of the sound is excellent.
"A Kind Of Magic" starts the CD off strong. The finger snapping with the musical special effects kick off the tune really well; and when Freddy Mercury comes in with the percussion I really like the sound of this rock tune! Freddy belts it out well, too; and that's excellent. "A Kind Of Magic" is truly a highlight of this album; but of course the major highlight of this CD is the next tune, "Bohemian Rhapsody. " "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a work of pure genius, the type of genius that I suspect comes from creative artists letting their imaginations go wild without inhibitions. Of course, "Bohemian Rhapsody" worked (and still works) like a charm to help Queen remain relevant in the music world; and this number remains hauntingly beautiful.
"Stone Cold Crazy" also has special effects; and the band rocks really hard to make this one stand out! They handle the tempo changes like the pros they always were--right in the spotlight, right where they belonged! "Tie Your Mother Down" is another excellent rock tune that screams its way out of the band and you're sure to love it. There's another gem in "These Are The Days Of Our Lives. " Freddy Mercury sings this passionately and I'm very impressed.
"Keep Yourself Alive" is another awesome song; the guitar work never lets you down and Freddy Mercury sings this without missing a beat! "Headlong" is yet another tune that I think you'll like; this is a true rock number with electric guitars that work very well for "Headlong. " The CD ends strong with Queen performing "The Show Must Go On. " "The Show Must Go On" ends the album with quite a memorable number and if you were just a casual fan of Queen before you're sure to be a more serious fan after hearing "The Show Must Go On" with the other songs on this CD.
The liner notes include many pictures of the band along with some notes about each song.
Classic Queen is a sweet deal at the current price; Queen fans will want this for their collections (as if they didn't have this one already). This is also a good album to start with if you're just discovering Queen. If you like this CD you should consider getting other CDs and CD sets by Queen including Greatest Hits, Vols. 1 & 2; Greatest Hits I, II & III - The Platinum Collection; A Night At The Opera; News Of The World and A Day At The Races. You won't regret it!

The CD that brought Queen back
The band had been out of the public eye for years, had not had a hit in the US for nearly a decade, and the first thing the band did was throw a huge party on the Queen Mary. When Hollywood Records signed Queen in the late 80's, it seemed like the height of folly. Then Freddie Mercury dies of AIDS in 1991, and Innuendo began to receive a second look. Then came a little film called Wayne's World.
Thanks to a pivotal scene in that movie, "Bohemian Rhapsody" took on a second chart life, peaking even higher than it did the first time. Hollywood rushed this compilation out to capitalize on the moment, and found Queen in the Top Ten albums for the first time since The Game. Essentially a long awaited follow-up to the original Queen Greatest Hits, the set takes on songs from The Works, A Kind of Magic, The Miracle and "Innuendo. " With "Bohemian Rhapsody" added as bait and a few other early songs ("Stone Cold Crazy," "Tie Your Mother Down," "Keep Yourself Alive") dropped in for balance, it gave credence to the notion that Queen's output from Hot Space on had been sorely neglected.
A better bet is to pick this CD with Queen - Greatest Hits, or go whole hog and get the double set Queen - Greatest Hits Vols 1&2, which packages them together AND adds a couple bonus songs. They all include nice book packages and lyrics. Frankly, any of the Queen hits collections is worth it, and Hollywood has done their best to issue as many as possible as the Queen legacy soldiers on.
Essential Queen
If you were to select 1 album with the essentials (i. This album truly is a "must-have" for the true Queen fan. e. , Bohemian Rhapsody, Who Wants to Live Forever, Show Must Go On, These are the Days of our Lives, Under Pressure, Radio Ga Ga), this is the album for you. One notable song missing, I Want to Break Free. However, if you were to attempt to find all songs on 1 disc, this has most of the essentials. Long live the legacy of Freddie Mercury, Long live Queen! .
